대만 반한감정
이날은 노태우 정부 시절 한국이 중국과 공식 수교하는 동시에 대만(중화민국)과의 단교를 선언한 날이었다. 대만과의 모든 정부 간 협정이 폐기됐고, 항공기·선박의 운항도 중단됐다. 당시 한국에는 명동·북창동·회현동 일대를 중심으로 1만8000명의 화교가 살고 있었다. 구(舊)한말인 1882년 청군을 따라와 정착한 화교가 한국사회에 뿌리내린 지 110년 되던 해에 한국에게서 버림받은 것이다. 그로부터 6개월 뒤인 93년 2월 명동의 옛 대만대사관에는 중국의 오성홍기(五星紅旗)가 게양됐다.내가 한 영작

ⓓ the relationship → its relations 관사 보다는 소유격이 우선함, relationship은 사람 사이의 관계를 뜻함.

단교 때도 인내하던 대만인들이 엉뚱한 데서 반한 감정을 표출하고 있다. 광저우 아시안게임 태권도에서 자국 선수의 실격 사건을 두고서다. 태극기를 불태우는 장면이 보도되고, 한국제품 불매운동으로 치달을 조짐마저 보인다. “중국이 한국과 짜고 대만의 금메달을 훔쳐갔다”는 등 어처구니없는 주장이 판치고 있으니 억울하다. 결백을 호소해 봐야 격분한 대만인에겐 쇠 귀에 경 읽기 상황이다.
우리로선 대만을 섭섭하게 한 건 없는지 추슬러 볼 일이다. 일본에서 ‘혐한(嫌韓)’이란 용어가 나온 지 오래다. 그렇더라도 예의는 서로가 지켜줘야 한다. 중국식 표현을 빌리자면 예상왕래(禮尙往來)가 있어야 하는 법임을 대만인은 알아야 한다.

In response, Korean flags ⓐare ⓑburned down and Korean products boycotted. They claim that China and Korea made a deal and stole the gold medal. The claim is ⓒungrounded, but ⓓthe emotional and angry Taiwanese do not seem to buy Korea’s appeal of innocence.
Maybe we should ⓔlook back if we had upset Taiwan in another way, but the Taiwanese should, too.

Writing Tip
ⓐ are → have been 현재 시제는 일반적인 경향성을 표현하므로 어색, 과거시점부터 지금까지 일어나고 있는 일이므로 현제완료 시제가 적절.
ⓑ burned down → burned down이 burned에 추가되면 건물 따위가 무너져 내림을 표현.
ⓒ ungrounded → unfounded ungrounded는 ‘이유 없는’에 가깝고 unfounded는 ‘근거 없는’을 뜻함.
ⓓ the emotional and angry Taiwanese → the Taiwanese 모든 대만사람들이 감정적이고 화가 났다고 표현해서는 안 되고 또한 그렇다고도 볼 수 없음.
ⓔ look back if we had → reflect on whether we’ve ‘했다면’이라기 보다 ‘했는지’의 의미로’ ‘whether’를 씀, look back은 과거의 일을 뒤돌아 보는 것임, 성찰의 의미로 ‘reflect’가 적절.
