President does not believe Pyongyang will give up its nuclear programs

President Lee Myung-bak vowed yesterday that South Korea will deal with North Korea in a wholly different manner - with fewer words and more action - judging that tolerance toward the belligerent regime has proved ineffective.

이명박 대통령은 적대적인 북한을 인내로 참아온 정책이 비효율적이라는 점이 입증됐다고 판단하고 앞으로는 북한을 전혀 다른 태도로, 즉 말보다는 행동으로, 대응하겠다고 어제 밝혔다.
Lee said that the South does not believe the North will give up its nuclear programs and military brinkmanship on its own and warned that the North will pay a price for any further provocations toward the South.

이 대통령은 북한이 핵무기 프로그램과 군사 도발을 포기할 것이라고 믿지 않는다며 북한이 남한에 추가 도발을 할 경우 응분의 대가를 치르게 할 것이라고 경고했다.
Lee’s stern words, his first public address since the Yeonpyeong attack, were made as Seoul and Washington entered the second day of one of their biggest joint military drills in a show of force against the North. The remarks and the drill follow a series of provocative actions by the North, including the deadly shelling of a South Korean island last Tuesday.

북한에 대한 무력시위로 사상 최대 한미 연합훈련이 이틀째 진행되는 가운데 이 대통령은 강한 어조로 북한이 연평도를 포격한 이후 처음으로 대국민 담화를 발표했다. 이 대통령의 대국민 담화와 한미 연합훈련은 지난주 화요일 북한이 남한의 섬을 포격한 것을 포함해 북한의 일련의 대남 도발에 대한 대응조치이다.
“I can’t stop feeling regret for the loss of innocent lives of our people and the destruction of the people’s livelihoods,” said Lee during a televised public address, referring to the North’s attack on Yeonpyeong Island. Lee said he takes responsibility for not preventing the attack from happening.

이 대통령은 TV로 생중계된 대국민 담화에서 북한의 연평도 공격을 언급하며 “무고한 우리 국민이 목숨을 잃고 삶의 터전이 파괴된 것에 대해 참으로 안타깝고 송구스럽다”고 말했다. 이 대통령은 북한의 도발을 막지 못한 것에 대해 책임을 통감한다고 말했다.
Apart from marines Seo Jeong-woo and Moon Gwang-wook, two construction workers - Kim Chi-baek and Bae Bok-cheol - were killed in the shelling, the first attack by the North on civilian land in the South since the end of the Korean War. More than 20 buildings were destroyed. Lee paid tribute to the casualties, somberly mentioning the names of the four killed.

해병대원 서정우, 문광욱과 민간인 건설노동자 김치백, 배복철씨가 북한의 포격으로 사망했다. 북한은 한국전쟁 이후 처음으로 남한의 민간인 지역에 공격을 감행했다. 건물 20여 채가 파괴됐다. 이 대통령은 사망자 4명의 이름을 엄숙하게 하나씩 부르면서 조의를 표했다.
