Market recovers to precrisis level

The benchmark Kospi index breached the 2,000-point mark yesterday for the first time in more than three years as it closed up 0.62 percent at 2,009.05.

코스피 지수가 어제 전날보다 0.62 % 오른 2,009.05로 마감하면서 3년 만에 처음으로 2,000 포인트 선을 돌파했다.
The last time the Kospi hit this level was on Nov. 7, 2007, when it recorded 2,043.17. Strong buying by foreigners and institutional investors largely contributed to a rise in share prices yesterday. Market capitalization also reached a record high of 1,117 trillion won ($980.3 billion) yesterday.

코스피 지수가 마지막으로 2,000선을 넘어섰던 때는 2007년 11월7일 2,043.17을 기록했을 때이다. 어제 주가 상승은 주로 외국인과 기관 투자자들의 강력한 매수에 힘입은 것이다. 시가총액도 어제 1,117조원으로 사상 최대를 기록했다.
Foreign investors have been the main drivers behind the stock market’s rise this year, injecting funds of more than 20 trillion won, because of the strong performance of Korean companies in export markets, such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor.

삼성전자와 현대자동차와 같은 한국 기업들이 수출시장에서 우수한 실적을 내고 있는 것에 힘입어 외국인 투자자들이 올해 20조원 이상을 투입하며 주가 상승을 주도하고 있다.
Samsung Electronics alone accounts for around 12 percent of the Kospi’s total market capitalization.
“Samsung Electronics accounts for nearly 41 percent of the global memory chip market as of the third quarter. Large-cap companies will continue to lead the stock market based on their strong performance,” said Kim Jin-young, an analyst with Samsung Securities.

삼성전자의 주식 시가총액이 코스피 전체 시가총액의 12% 정도를 차지한다. 김진영 삼성증권 애널리스트는 “삼성전자는 3분기말 현재 전세계 메모리칩 시장의 41%를 차지한다. 우수한 실적을 바탕으로 대기업들이 계속 주식시장을 주도할 것이다”고 말했다.
Choi Chang-ho at Shinhan Investment Corp. said that “the share prices of large-caps are likely to rise further since they are the favorite stocks among foreign and institutional investors.” Shipbuilders have recently emerged as popular stocks based on the belief that global trade will recover, which will lead to more orders for ships.

신한투자금융의 최창호 애널리스트는 “외국인과 기관 투자자들이 대기업 주식을 선호하기 때문에 대기업들의 주가는 더 오를 것”이라고 말했다. 세계 무역이 회복되고 선박에 대한 주문이 증가할 것이라는 전망 때문에 조선주들이 최근 새롭게 각광받고 있다.
