Christmas tree lit at border hot spot
South Korean Christians sing a Christmas song on Dec. 21 in front of a 30-meter-tall (100 feet) steel Christmas tree that would be visible to North Koreans living near the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas at Aegibong, a western mountain peak in Gimpo, Gyeonggi. The Christmas lights went on again for the first time in seven years. Aegibong is just 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) away from North Korean territory and the 30-meter structure, which is used to celebrate both Christmas and Buddha’s Birthday, was a form of anti-North propaganda that was stopped during the Sunshine Policy of engagement with the North.
