In inundated Pohang, snow is an unfamiliar foe

POHANG, North Gyeongsang - This port city on the southeast coast was blanketed with the most snow it has seen in 69 years and locals have had no idea how to get around in it. Snow fell from early Monday through yesterday, totaling 28.7 centimeters (11.2 inches), the most since city officials started keeping track in 1942.

이 동남 해안 항구도시가 69년 만의 기록적인 폭설에 뒤덮여 지역주민들이 어떻게 대처할 지 몰라 당황했다. 월요일 아침부터 어제까지 눈이 내려 적설량을 측정하기 시작한 1942년 이래 최고인 28.7 cm를 기록했다.
After the snow stopped yesterday morning, commuters braved icy roads and treacherous traffic conditions. The highway connecting Pohang and Gyeongju was paralyzed, traffic authorities said, and it took more than three hours for drivers to reach Gyeongju, a trip that normally takes 30 minutes.

어제 아침 눈이 그치자 미끄러운 도로와 불안한 교통상황에도 불구하고 시민들이 용감하게 출근길에 나섰다. 교통당국에 따르면 포항과 경주를 잇는 고속도로가 마비 돼 평소 경주까지 30분 걸리는 출근시간이 3시간 넘게 걸렸다.
Most taxies in the city stopped operating and bus routes were cut. People living on the outskirts of Pohang had no bus service yesterday. Bus driver Lee Jong-seok described an epic bus ride Monday: he departed the city center at 3:50 p.m. carrying about 70 passengers.

택시들은 거의 운행을 중단했고 노선 버스 운행도 대폭 줄었다. 포항시 변두리에 사는 주민들은 어제 버스를 이용할 수 없었다. 버스 운전기사 이종석씨가 월요일 아찔했던 버스 운행 경험을 털어 놓았다. 그는 오후 3시50분쯤 승객 70여명을 태우고 도심을 출발했다.
Driving at 25-kilometers per hour, Lee passed through 60 centimeter snow drifts and was blocked at one point by an abandoned truck at the base of a steeply sloping road. The bus and cars behind it couldn’t get up the slope. Police were called in to help the bus get over the slope, and it didn’t arrive at its final stop until 10:50 p.m.

시속 25 km로 운행하면서 이씨는 60 cm 높이의 눈 더미들을 통과했고 한번은 가파르게 경사진 도로에 버려진 트럭에 가로막혔다. 버스와 뒤따르던 차들은 경사진 도로를 오를 수 없었다. 경찰에 도움을 청해 겨우 경사진 도로를 넘어 갔으나, 오후 10시50분이 되서야 최종 목적지에 도달했다.
According to Korea Airports Corporation, all flights in and out of Pohang Airport were cancelled until 4:50 p.m. yesterday and passengers were forced to take KTX trains. In Donghae district, which got 52 centimeters of snow, about 1,700 greenhouses, or 30 percent of the greenhouses in the city, collapsed and about 1,130 tons of spinach worth 3 billion won ($2.6 million) were lost, said an official at Pohang city government.

한국공항공사에 따르면, 어제 오후 4시50분까지는 포항공항에 이착륙하는 모든 항공편이 취소돼 승객들은 모두 KTX를 타야 했다. 52 cm의 폭설이 내린 동해구에서는 시 전체 비닐하우스의 30퍼센트에 해당하는 비닐하우스 1천7백여 동이 무너져 내려 시가 30억원 상당의 시금치 1천1백30 톤이 피해를 입었다고 포항시 관계자가 말했다.
