Gangwon governor convicted of bribery, stripped of his post

SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) -- Gangwon Province Gov. Lee Kwang-jae was stripped of his post Thursday after the Supreme Court upheld his six-month suspended jail term and restitution of 114 million won (US$102,333) on charges of receiving illegal political funds.

Under the current election law, a confirmed jail term or a fine of more than 1 million won results in the nullification of parliamentary and elected officials' seats and disqualifies them from running for a public office for the next ten years.

The 46-year-old Lee, who once was a right-hand man of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, had been indicted in 2009 on charges of receiving illegal political funds from two local businessmen, including Park Yeon-cha, who was at the center of the bribery scandal involving Roh and his aides, in 2006.

He was elected the governor of the eastern province of Gangwon in the June 2 local elections last year but had been temporarily suspended from executing his duties pending court ruling on the bribery charges. He was reinstated after the Constitutional Court said he could assume the duties as governor. [YONHAP]

이광재 징역형 확정…지사직 상실

이광재(46) 강원도지사가 대법원에서 유죄가 최종 확정됨에 따라 지사직을 상실하게 됐다. 박연차 게이트에 연루돼 수사받기 시작한지 22개월여만이다. 현행 정치자금법과 공직선거법은 벌금 100만원 이상의 형이 확정되면 공무담임권과 피선거권을 제한하도록 규정하고 있기 때문이다.

대법원 3부(주심 박시환)는 27일 오후 2시 서울 서초동 대법원청사 대법정에서 열린 이 지사의 정치자금법 위반 혐의 상고심 선고공판에서 이 지사의 상고를 기각하고 유죄를 선고한 1·2심 판단을 그대로 받아들였다. 이에 따라 이 지사는 2심이 선고한 징역 6개월에 집행유예 1년, 추징금 1억1400만원의 혐이 확정됐다.

재판부는 판결문에서 "모두 여섯 가지 혐의 가운데 세 가지 혐의를 유죄로 인정하고 세 가지 혐의를 무죄로 판단한 원심 판단에 아무런 법률적 하자가 없다"고 밝혔다.
이 지사는 2004년 정상문 전 청와대 총무비서관의 사돈에게서 1000만원을 받고, 2004~2008년 박연차 전 태광실업 회장에게서 4차례에 걸쳐 총 12만달러와 2000만원을 , 정대근 전 농협중앙회장에게서 2006년 2만달러를 받은 혐의(정치자금법 위반)로 2009년 4월 구속기소됐다.
