Date chosen for talks with North: Feb. 8

Working-level talks between the militaries of North and South Korea will be held on Feb. 8 in Panmunjom, the Ministry of National Defense said yesterday.

The ministry said in yesterday’s press release that North Korea had sent a statement addressed from its defense minister, requesting working-level talks be held on Feb. 8 to prepare for high-level military talks.

The South Korean Defense Ministry had initially sent a request to North Korea on Jan. 26 to hold working-level talks on Feb. 11 after Pyongyang sent a request for talks on Jan. 20.

North Korea had asked earlier this week that working talks be held yesterday, but South Korea refused.

The two parties will discuss the agenda for future high-level military talks and what rank of officials will take part.

If military talks are held, it will be the first since the last round of talks on Sept. 30.
