Kim’s other son caught partying at Clapton show

The world got a very different glimpse of Kim’s second youngest son, Kim Jong-chol, yesterday. He was filmed boogying at a Valentine’s Day Eric Clapton concert in Singapore.
The video and still images of the 29-year-old were an exclusive scoop by Korea Broadcasting System. Sources in South Korea think the network was tipped off about Jong-chol’s whereabouts by the National Intelligence Service.
Before yesterday, the most recent public images of the young man were from another Clapton concert in Europe in 2006.
Analysts were intrigued that Jong-chol would be at a concert in Singapore on Feb. 14, just two days before his father’s 69th birthday, which is an important national holiday in North Korea. Jong-chol and his entourage left the country after the concert for Pyongyang via Beijing, said a South Korean government source.
The KBS report said Jong-chol arrived in Singapore early this month and visited Universal Studios and Underwater World Singapore.

At the concert, he was accompanied by an entourage of roughly 20 people, including a young female by his side. He wasn’t wearing anything out of the ordinary in the images released by the Korean broadcaster, dressed in black pants and a dark T-shirt. He sported a shaggy haircut suitable for a rock concert, not for reviewing a military parade.
Glimpses of Kim Jong-chol later showed him taking pictures in front of the stage at Singapore Indoor Stadium while making conversation with his female companion.
Kim Jong-chol, who studied in Switzerland with his younger brother and North Korea’s heir apparent Kim Jong-un, had softer facial features and was less chubby than his younger brother in the KBS report.
Jong-chol is a long-time Clapton fan. After he attended a string of his concerts in Europe in 2006, North Korea in 2008 invited Clapton to play in Pyongyang, which was confirmed by a North Korean diplomat in London at the time. Last December, WikiLeaks released cables from the U.S. Embassy in Seoul in 2007 saying that a source told the embassy that an invitation to Clapton to play in the North could be useful given “Kim Jong-il’s second son’s devotion to the rock legend.”
Western music is normally banned in the communist state.
The spotlight has never lingered long over Jong-chol compared to his other brothers after he was ruled out as a possible successor to his father long ago because he was considered too effeminate, according to South Korean intelligence sources. Kim Jong-il’s former sushi chef, Kenji Fujimoto, has said he was too “girlish.” Some reports have said he has a hormone problem.
Jong-chol’s “non-heir” status was seen to be confirmed with his appearance outside of the country just two days prior to his father’s 69th birthday. Preparations for the event have been as intense as last year, the Ministry of Unification said yesterday.
“From late last month, North Korea has been holding various events throughout the country and on all social levels, including celebratory meetings, visits to historic monuments, movie screenings, performances and exhibits,” said Unification Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo yesterday.
“North Korea’s official media have also been releasing reports idolizing Kim Jong-il by lauding his achievements,” she said. “During this period, poems praising Kim Jong-il as well as news that unique natural phenomena were occurring in time for Kim’s birthday were reported.”
The day following Kim Jong-il’s birthday is also a national holiday.
Eric Clapton is set to hold a concert in Seoul on Feb. 20.

김정일 북한 국방위원장의 생일인 16일 북한은 경축 분위기 속에서 후계자인 삼남 김정은의 지위를 공고히 하는 모습이다. 반면 후계에서 밀려난 장남 정남과 차남 정철은 해외를 떠돌며 엇갈린 행보를 보이고 있다.
이날 조선중앙통신은 김 위원장의 공훈국가합창단 공연 관람 소식을 전하면서 수행자 명단에서 정은을 첫 번째로 언급했다. 그 동안 김정은보다 먼저 발표됐던 리영호 군 인민군 총참모장의 이름이 뒤로 밀린 것은 통상적으로 북한 언론의 거명 순서가 서열을 반영한다는 점에서 눈길이 끄는 부분이다.
일각에서는 정은이 최근 북한 최고권력 기구인 국방위 제1부위원장에 추대됐다는 주장을 제기하고 있으며, 이에 따른 서열 상승이 이날 수행자 명단 언급에 반영됐다는 관측이 나오고 있다.
정부 당국은 이 같은 관측에 대해 유보적 입장이다. 이와 관련해 이종주 통일부 부대변인은 "직함이 추가적으로 부여됐다는 정황이나 정보가 없다"고 말했다. 다른 정부 당국자는 "4월 열리는 최고인민회의를 기다려봐야 할 것"이라고 말했다.
그러나 전문가들은 정은이 직책을 받았거나 머지않아 받을 가능성에 무게를 두고 있다. 국방위는 북한의 최고 군사지도기관으로서 사실상 최고 권력기관이다. 김 위원장도 1993년 4월 국방위원장으로 선출돼 지금까지 자리를 지키고 있다. 특히 김 위원장의 건강 상태가 악화된 것을 감안할 때 갑작스런 사망 등 급변사태시 군부를 장악하기 위해 정은이 국방위 제1부위원장을 확보할 필요가 있다는 분석이다.
반면 차남 정철은 지난 14일 싱가포르에서 열린 영국 출신 팝스타 에릭 클랩튼의 공연을 관람한 것이 확인됐다. 이에 따라 정철도 장남 정남과 마찬가지로 권력 투쟁에서 밀린 후 평양을 떠나 해외를 떠돌고 있는 것 아니냐는 관측이 나오고 있다.
김 위원장과 세 번째 부인 고영희 사이에서 낳은 정철은 정은의 바로 윗 형이다. 지난 1993~1998년 `박철`이라는 가명으로 정은과 함께 스위스 베른 국제학교를 다녔다. 권력에 무관심하며 내성적인 성격인 것으로 알려져 있다. 김 위원장의 요리사였던 일본인 후지모토 겐지는 "정철은 술도 약하고 여자 같은 성격"이라고 묘사했다.
정철은 또 에릭 클랩턴의 열혈 팬으로 알려져 있으며 앞서 2006년에도 에릭 클랩턴의 콘서트 관람차 독일을 방문해 일본 언론 등에 포착됐다. 특히 당시 보도는 정철이 김 위원장의 눈 밖에 나는 결정적 계기로 작용한 것으로 알려졌다.
장남 정남의 경우 일본과 마카오 등지를 떠돌며 생활하고 있다. 당초 가장 유력한 후계자로 거론됐던 정남은 1998년과 2003년 최고인민회의 대의원 명단에 포함되기도 했다. 그러나 2001년 가짜 여권으로 일본에 입국하려다 적발된 사건으로 후계 구도에서 멀어졌다. 대북 소식통은 "생모 성혜림이 2002년 모스크바에서 사망한 후부터 입지가 흔들린 것으로 보인다"고 설명했다.
정남은 지난달 말 일본 언론을 통해 "아버지(김정일)는 세습에 반대였지만 국가체제를 안정시키기 위해 어쩔 수 없었다"며 동생의 권력 승계에 부정적인 입장을 밝히기도 했다. 아울러 북한의 후계구도 공식화 후 암살·망명설에 휩싸이기도 했다.
대북 소식통은 "북한의 후계작업이 속도를 낼 수록 정남·정철 형제는 권력과 거리를 두고 생활하게 될 것"이라며 "정철은 동생 정은과 관계가 원만하고 정치적 야심도 적은 반면, 정남은 어머니가 다르고 동생의 권력 승계에 비판적이기 때문에 정은이 눈엣가시로 여길 경우 숙청할 가능성도 배제할 수 없다"고 평가했다.
