From gadgets to art, renting is all the rage

All items in the living room, except the rug curtain, have been rented from different service providers. By Kwon Hyuk-jae

We all have something like it. There is the treadmill machine that ends up as an expensive hanger and the fur coat that hangs in the closet gathering dust. For most of us, it is not an unfamiliar story.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many rental companies offering everything from artwork and air and water purifiers to electronics and, yes, even designer garments.

Each month, Jeong Soon-joo, 40, an entrepreneur, rents five paintings by Korean artists to hang up in her shop. The combined rental fee for all five pieces is 200,000 won ($179.82) per month.

“Even if I pooled all of the money I spent on rental fees for twenty years, I wouldn’t be able to purchase any of the paintings hanging on my wall,” Jeong said. “Another plus side of renting is that I can change the paintings whenever I’m bored with them.”

Paintings, plants and more

Artrie (02-587-4110, www.artrie.com) has paintings, sculptures and other artworks available for rent. The company consults with the client and suggests a piece according to his or her taste. The rental fee is 20,000 won per every 70 by 80 centimeters (27.6 by 31.5 inches) per month. The company has more than 1,700 paintings and sculptures by Korean artists and art posters by foreign artists.

Flower Scent (070-4230-8520, www.flowerscent.co.kr) rents out potted plants, such as orchids and leafy plants. The monthly rental fee is around 20 percent of the price of the plant and ranges from 10,000 won to 25,000 won. A staff member makes suggestions after visiting the place where the plants will be placed.

Toy Uncle (070-7655-7654, www.toyuncle.co.kr) lends baby products such as walkers and toys for between 30,000 won to 40,000 won per month.

Yejin Korea (02-355-0191, www.yejinlprea.com) provides bedding to hotels but plans to start renting to individuals in June.

Young Chang Piano lends grand pianos, one of which usually costs more than 10 million won, for 200,000 won to 250,000 won per month.

Borrowed bags and dresses

Designer bag and dress rentals have become more popular - even for ordinary occasions.

“A few years ago, most women rented clothing and accessories for special occasions, but these days they do it for everyday occasions as well,” said Lee Jeong-eun, a representative of the clothing rental shop Style Care (031-889-9328, www.stylecare.co.kr).

There are also more upmarket options. Designer rental company Palace Look (070-8600-0883, www.palacelook.com) provides bags, furs and watches. The company Style Care offers bags, accessories and sunglasses. Another company, In Style, lends dresses, suits and more.

Most places offer a rental period of between three to five days. The rental fee is generally around 5 to 10 percent of the price.

A Louis Vuitton handbag priced at 1.96 million won in a department store can be rented for 90,000 won for five days.

A Bulgari watch priced at 4.5 million won can be rented for 40,000 won with a 100,000 won deposit that is refunded when the watch is returned.

Everything under the sun

Some rental firms specialize, others do it all and provide everything from daily items to consumer electronics and exercise equipment.

At Seoul Total Rental (02-440-6677, www.seoulrental.co.kr), clients can rent a 42-inch standing PDP television for 360,000 won per month and a standing air-conditioner for 340,000 won per month.

An outdoor tent that sleeps seven can be rented for 59,000 won, and a treadmill goes for 55,000 won per month.

Remarket (032-652-3945, www.remarket.co.kr) has sofas for 50,000 won to 200,000 won, a living room cabinet for 30,000 won to 100,000 won, a coffee machine for 20,000 won to 40,000 won, and a laptop for 110,000 won to 130,000 won. All prices are per month.

Electronics or furniture rentals are best for those who plan to use an item for less than six months.

Contract concerns

Ahn Hyun-sook of the Korea Consumer Agency advises renters to examine and report flaws in rental items before the rental period begins and to get a signed agreement from the rental company. Otherwise, it will be difficult to prove that you or the company fulfilled the agreement if something goes wrong.

“A written contract is necessary so customers aren’t swindled by a verbal agreement,” Ahn said. For a long-term rental, keep the receipt for at least three years, Ahn said.

If you damage the rental item, it is best to inform the rental company right away in order to avoid problems when returning it. Repairs must be done at repair shops authorized by the rental company, and customers may have to pay the full price of a damaged item.

쇼퍼홀릭(shopaholic·쇼핑중독자)이 아니더라도 큰 맘 먹고 산 물건이 애물단지가 된 경험이 있을 거다. 러닝머신이 빨래걸이가 된다든가, 혹해서 산 모피코트가 옷장에서 공간만 차지하는 일. 하필 이런 물건들은 비싸서 더 속이 쓰리다. 하지만, 살 수 없다고 못 가지는 건 아니다. 사기 망설여지면 빌리면 된다. 정수기·비데·공기청정기 렌털이 많지만 알고 보면 우리가 일상에서 쓰는 대부분의 것들은 빌려 쓸 수 있다. 가구·전자제품·유아용품·운동기구는 기본, 그림·화분·명품을 빌려주는 업체도 있다.

렌털로 작가의 그림을 집 안에

대여한 그림으로 장식한 아파트 거실. 충북 음성에 사는 자영업자 정순주(40)씨는 국내외 작가의 그림 5점을 매달 대여해 거실과 가게에 걸고 있다. 한 달 총 대여비는 20만원. 정씨는 “렌털 비용 10년 치를 모아도 지금 집에 걸려 있는 작품들을 사기 힘들다”며 “원할 때마다 다른 작품으로 교체할 수 있는 것도 좋다”고 말했다. 그림 렌털업체 아트리에는 그림·조각 등 미술작품을 빌려준다. 상담을 통해 고객의 취향에 맞는 작품들을 제안한다. 한 달 대여비용은 10호(70㎝×80㎝)에 2만원. 국내 작가의 작품, 해외 유명작가의 아트포스터 등 1700여 개 작품을 보유하고 있다.

화분 렌털업체 꽃향기는 호접란·관엽식물 등을 대여한다. 월 대여료는 식물가격의 20% 선으로 보통 1만~2만5000원이다. 업체 직원이 화분을 놓을 장소를 직접 둘러보고 분위기에 맞는 식물을 추천한다.

장난감아저씨에서는 보행기·장난감 등을 한 달 3만~4만원에 빌릴 수 있다. 호텔에 주로 침구류를 대여하는 한국침구예진은 올 상반기 중 개인을 대상으로 클라모프 등 해외 유명 침구를 한 달 2만원 정도에 대여할 계획이다. 영창피아노는 1000만원이 넘는 그랜드피아노를 월 20만~25만원에 빌려준다.

명품백·드레스도 빌려 쓰세요

비싼 명품 가방·드레스 렌털은 20~30대 여성들 사이에서 인기다. 스타일케어 이정은 대표는 “몇 년 전 만해도 이벤트·파티를 위해 빌리는 이가 많았지만, 요즘은 일상생활에 쓰려고 빌리는 사람이 많다”고 말했다.

명품 렌털업체 팰리스룩은 가방·모피·시계, 스타일케어는 가방·액세서리·선글라스, 인스타일은 드레스·정장·특수의상 등을 빌려준다. 기본 대여기간은 3~5일이며, 시중 가격의 5~10%를 대여료로 받는다. 예를 들어 시중가 196만원인 루이뷔통 핸드백은 4박5일에 9만원, 시중가 450만원인 불가리 시계는 2박3일에 예치금 10만원, 대여금 4만원에 빌릴 수 있다. 예치금은 물건을 반환하면 돌려받는다.

생활용품·가전제품·가구·운동기구를 모두 취급하는 종합렌털업체들도 있다. 에스티렌탈은 스탠드형 PDP 42인치 TV를 월 36만원, 30평형 스탠드 에어컨을 월 34만원에 빌려준다. 리마켓은 1개월 기준으로 소파 5만~20만원, 거실장 3만~10만원, 커피머신 2만~4만원, 노트북은 11만~13만원에 빌려준다. 아직 물품별 대여비용은 업계 표준으로 정해진 건 없고 업체마다 각각 다르다. 가전기기·가구 등은 한두 달 사용할 것이라면 빌리는 게 낫지만 6개월 이상 쓸 거라면 사는 게 낫다. 운동기구·레저용품은 사용빈도가 높지 않다면 빌리는 걸 고려해볼 만하다. 에스티렌탈의 경우 텐트는 7인용이 2박3일에 5만9000원, 러닝머신은 한 달에 5만5000원이다.

구두약속은 반드시 계약서에 적어두고 사인 받으세요

렌털업체가 간혹 계약서에는 없는 내용을 보장한다고 구두로 공지할 때가 있다. 이럴 때는 꼭 그 내용을 계약서에 적고 업체의 사인을 받아둬야 한다. 말로 약속한 내용을 지키지 않더라도 소비자가 이를 입증할 방법이 없기 때문이다.

또 장기간 빌릴 때는 비용을 납부했다는 영수증을 적어도 3년 동안은 보관하고 있어야 한다. 1~2년이 지나 렌털요금을 내지 않았다고 채권추심을 하는 경우가 있어서다. 한국소비자원 안현숙 상품팀장은 “피해 신고가 오더라도 이를 확정하려면 입증할 서류가 필요하다”며 “계약서에 없는 내용은 써두고, 영수증은 꼭 보관해야 피해를 막을 수 있다”고 말했다.

명품을 빌릴 경우는 좀 더 주의해야 한다. 배송 받았을 때 하자가 있을 경우 즉시 업체에 확인해야 한다. 그래야 반납할 때 문제가 안 생긴다. 물건이 망가진 경우에는 물품의 상태에 따라 시중 가격 그대로 물어줘야 하는 경우도 있다. 물건이 망가진 경우 임의로 수선하지 말고, 대여업체에 연락해 업체가 거래하는 전문수선점에서 수리하도록 해야 한다. 임의로 수리하는 것보다 비용을 아끼고 분쟁을 줄일 수 있다.
