Music professor at SNU accused of ‘violent’ teaching

The strict music apprenticeship system - and its accompanying tendency to breed an intense, sometimes violent atmosphere in the music community - is under scrutiny after a group of students at Seoul National University’s (SNU) College of Music recently submitted a petition to administrators of the university titled, “A music university professor’s violence against students.”

About 10 students claim in the petition that music Professor Kim In-hye, 50, regularly beat them on their stomachs and backs and pulled their hair. They also claim they were forced to sell concert tickets and bring her gifts. After the petition drew media attention last weekend, SNU announced yesterday that it will refer the petition to the school’s disciplinary committee within the month.

Kim said in an interview with DongA Ilbo on Wednesday that her aggressive character might have led her to frequently hit her vocal music students, but she flatly denied that it is violence.

Kim believes that her students mistook music education’s long tradition of strict apprenticeship as violence and that most other vocal music teachers use similar “educational methods.” Kim denied she forced her students to sell concert tickets or buy gifts for her as a condition.

The relationship between a teacher and a student is unique in the music community, as traditional music education sticks to the longtime custom of intense, one-on-one lessons. A piano professor at another Seoul university said that “as an educational method of the musical community is handed down from one human being to another, absolute trust and obedience and trust from the students to their teachers are necessary.”

Moreover, because vocal music requires singers to use their bodies, unlike other music fields, it is harder to draw the line between advice and abuse, as well as to uncover inappropriate behavior by an instructor. SNU students and their parents have submitted petitions since last November last year but no action has yet been taken.

Another factor is the prominence of the professor. “Professor Kim is a renowned vocal musician in Korea. Being her student ensures a strong foothold in becoming a successful musician. Therefore, not many would dare to raise such a problem,” said a graduate of SNU’s College of Music.
