Ambitious student achieves perfect SAT scores

For the first time in Korea, a 17-year high school student, Go Ji-yeon, got a perfect score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for the admission to U.S universities. It was Go’s first attempt at the SATs.

A student at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy in Hoengseong, Gangwon, Go said her homeroom teacher suggested she try taking the SATs last month.

She achieved perfect scores of 800 on all three sections: critical reading, math and essay writing.

Go, who attended elementary and middle schools in the United States from 2001 to 2005, has almost native-speaker proficiency in English. But experts say perfect English ability doesn’t guarantee high scores on SATs, which require critical thinking abilities.

Go said the secret of her success was her habit of reading and writing on a broad range of subjects.

“ My parents have pointed out the importance of reading since I was young and I have read a wide range of books,” Go said. “I am currently reading about three or four books a week.”

“I have written some essays in my spare time, a great help for the SAT essay test,” Go said.

Go added that her experience in debating in English and mock courtroom competitions were a big help for the critical thinking section.

Since she entered the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, an elite high school, she has participated in a variety of student societies: broadcasting, drama, debating, volunteer work with the blind and working on the English newspaper.

Go said she had no spare time on weekends due to her extracurricular activities.

“There are more passionate friends around me who are doing more things than me,” Go added.

Go said her dream is to be an attorney in international law.

민사고 1학년 여학생 美 SAT 만점

국내 고등학교 1학년 여학생이 미국 수학능력시험(SAT)에서 만점을 받았다.

강원도 횡성 민족사관고에 다니는 고지연(17)양은 지난달 학교 지도교사의 권유로 SAT에 처음 응시해 비판적 읽기, 수학, 작문 등 세 과목에서 한 문항도 틀리지 않고 각각 800점씩 2천400점을 얻었다.

고양은 2001년 부모를 따라 미국으로 건너가 현지 초·중학교에서 4년 반 가량 공부해 사실 영어실력은 뛰어나다.

그러나 SAT는 비판적 사고 능력, 논리력 등 언어 외적인 영역을 중점적으로 측정하기 때문에 단순히 영어 실력만 갖고는 고득점을 따내기 어렵다.

고양은 만점 비결로 `꾸준한 독서와 쓰기`를 들었다.

그는 "처음 접한 SAT는 단기간에 준비할 수 있는 내용이 아니었다. 초등학생 때부터 부모님이 독서의 중요성을 강조하셔서 많은 책을 읽어왔다. 지금도 매주 3~4권 정도 읽는다"며 "틈틈이 해온 작문도 큰 도움이 됐다"고 말했다.

초등학교 3학년 때부터 각종 영어토론대회, 모의법정대회 등에 적극적으로 참여해왔는데 대회 경험이 비판적 읽기, 작문 시험 등에 상당한 도움이 됐다고 덧붙였다.

이제 막 고등학생이 된 고양은 방송반, 연극부, 토론동아리, 시각장애인봉사 동아리, 영자신문반 등 5개가 넘는 교내 동아리에 참여하고 있다.

휴일에는 동아리 활동 때문에 몸이 두 개라도 모자랄 판이다.

고양은 "상담 선생님도 제가 너무 욕심이 많은 것 같다고 하셨지만 빠듯한 시간을 쪼개며 희열을 느낄 때가 많다. 계획을 잘 짜면 시간이 남기도 한다"며 "나보다 열심히 하는 친구도 많다"고 말했다.

고양은 대학에서 법학을 전공한 뒤 국제변호사가 되고 싶다고 포부를 밝혔다.

"막연히 법조인이 되고 싶었는데 최근 사법연수원과 로펌을 견학하면서 검사, 변호사들을 만나 그들의 신념을 보면서 저의 미래 모습을 더 확신하게 됐습니다."
