Radioactive alert sounded

Workers fled the Hanaro Facility at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute yesterday after an emergency alert was sounded for a radioactive leak. The institute, located in Yuseong, Daejeon, alerted its workers at 2:32 p.m. yesterday of the emergency, rated code white, the lowest radioactive alert level. According to the institute and the National Emergency Management Agency, radioactive material floated to the surface of a tank that was being used for an research experiment in a nuclear reactor. An official at the institute said the radioactivity was “higher than normal,” but no radioactive material leaked out of the facility.

대전원자력硏 '백색비상'…외부누출없어

20일 오후 2시 32분께 대전시 유성구 덕진동 한국원자력연구원 하나로 연구시설에서 방사선 '백색' 비상이 발령돼 근무 직원들이 대피했다.

원자력연구원 및 소방방재청에 따르면 이날 오후 1시 3분께 연구용 원자로인 하나로에서 NTB 작업(실리콘 덩어리에 중성자를 쬐여 반도체 와이퍼를 만드는 작업) 중 실리콘 덩어리를 넣는 수직공(알루미늄통)이 수조 위로 떠오르면서 '수조 상부 지역감시기' 경보등이 울려 근무 직원 3명이 대피한 상태다.

수직공이 상부로 떠오르면 시설 안에 방사선량이 높아진다.

원자력연구원은 5분 뒤인 1시8분께 원자로 가동을 정지했으며, 방사선량이 높아진 것을 확인하고 백색 비상을 발령했다.

백색 비상은 백색, 청색, 적색 방사선 위험 3단계 중 맨 아랫단계다.

원자력연구원 관계자는 "하나로 시설에 방사선량이 기준보다 높아 백색비상을 발령한 것"이라며 "시설 외부로 누출된 것은 없다"고 말했다.

원자력연구원은 정확한 원인은 파악중이라고 밝혔다.
