A swordsman is rated on his swordsmanship. Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645), a legendary samurai in Japan, ⓐreckoned ⓑthe state of emptiness ⓒas the highest level of swordsmanship. When a swordsman learns the swordsmanship but is not bound by it, knows the enemy but does not hate him, and empties his mind, the sword on his hand becomes unbeatable. Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi found art in the movement of the knife of a butcher. “He moved the blade, making a noise that never fell out of rhythm. It harmonized with the Mulberry Woods Dance, like music from ancient times.” The butcher said he met the ox with his mind rather than with his eyes. It is the way of swordsmanship to move the blade “according to natural laws, striking apart large gaps, moving toward large openings.”
