4 stranded in New Zealand after quake

Four Korean travelers were stranded in buildings in Christchurch, New Zealand, after an earthquake hit the country’s second largest city yesterday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Seoul.

The ministry said the four people, who have yet to be identified, asked the Korean Embassy in New Zealand for help getting rescued from buildings hit by the 6.3-magnitude quake. The buildings in question had demolished entry steps, the ministry said. Two of the Koreans were staying in a hotel and two others were in a high-rise building, it said. Korean Ambassador to New Zealand Woo Suk-dong has asked New Zealand authorities for help rescuing the Koreans, the ministry said.

According to reports, at least 65 people were killed in the tremor. There are around 4,000 Koreans, including tourists, currently in Christchurch.

“We will try to make sure all Koreans in New Zealand remain safe and sound,” the ministry said.

크라이스트처치 지진으로 한국인 여행객 고립

22일 오후 강진이 발생한 뉴질랜드 남섬 크라이스트처치의 한 건물 안에 한국인들도 고립돼 구조 요청을 해온 것으로 나타났다.

뉴질랜드 주재 한국대사관은 22일 크라이스트처치에서 발생한 지진으로 호텔 안에 있는 한국인 여행객 4명이 목조 계단 등이 무너지면서 안에 갇혀 밖으로 빠져 나오지 못하게 됨에 따라 구조 요청을 해왔다고 밝혔다.

우석동 영사는 이들로부터 구조 요청을 받은 즉시 뉴질랜드 긴급 구조당국에 이 같은 사실을 전달하고 조속한 조치를 당부했다고 밝혔다.

그는 교민들의 인명 피해 여부에 대해서는 상황을 파악하기 위해 크라이스트처치 교민회, 뉴질랜드 구조 당국등과 긴밀히 연락을 취하고 있다며 그러나 아직까지 큰 인명피해 상황은 보고되지 않았다고 밝혔다.

그는 이날 지진으로 크라이스트처치에 통신장애까지 발생하면서 상황 파악에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다고 덧붙였다.

크라이스트처치에는 교민과 여행객 등 한국인들이 4천여명이상 되는 것으로 알려지고 있다.
