A daring flight into Egypt to escape Libya

Koreans who were working on a construction project in Libya describe their daring escape yesterday at a house in Cairo. By Song Ji-young

CAIRO - Nine Koreans working in Libya escaped the antigovernment turmoil in a 2,300-kilometer (1,429-mile) drive across the desert on mostly unpaved roads that took 67 hours - and said they’re glad they did it.

At 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, the nine Koreans, who were working on a construction site in Libya for a Korean architecture company called Space, emerged from a van in Cairo, the capital city of neighboring Egypt. Relief was plastered across their faces.

The exodus, the first group escape from Libya by Koreans since the start of the pro-democracy rallies, started at 9 a.m. Sunday. The nine boarded a 12-person van in Tobruk, a northeastern Libyan city.

The incessant gunfire and the closing of banks and stores made them nervous about staying in the country, they said. And a looting of their office by local residents Saturday accelerated their decision, they said.

“Five public buildings [in the city] were set on fire in three days, and seven civilians were killed,” said Lee Dong-hi, a 57-year-old manager of the company.

The group’s original destination was the capital of Tripoli, 1,500 kilometers away, from which they hoped to get a flight to Korea. Lee said they drove west from Tobruk, but after 700 kilometers, they found the roads were blocked.

They turned around and headed back to Tobruk. On their way back, they used unpaved roads to avoid being ambushed by thieves.

After a short break in Tobruk, they headed east to Egypt.

The van was stopped four times for questioning by authorities at checkpoints. Luckily they had licenses to travel within Libya from the housing authorities and they were allowed through the checkpoints.

Finally they reached Libya’s border with Egypt. The immigration office on the Libyan side had no officers, hinting at the government’s loss of control of its eastern region. There were some Libyan soldiers at the border, but they let them pass into Egypt at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

From the border, the van drove 700 kilometers farther to get to Cairo.

“In the northeastern region of Libya alone, there are hundreds of Korean employees remaining,” said Lee. He said many of them will have more difficulty escaping if they don’t have commuting licenses.

There are around 1,400 Koreans in Libya, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Korea plans to send a chartered flight to evacuate its nationals tomorrow, MoneyToday reported, citing the Transportation Ministry.

건설업체 ‘공간’ 직원들 공포의 리비아 탈출기

67시간 동안 2300㎞를 달렸다. 반정부 시위와 유혈 진압으로 사실상 내전 상태에 들어간 리비아에서 한국인 9명이 목숨을 건 탈출에 성공했다. 리비아에서 일하던 한국인들의 첫 집단 피란이다.

23일 오전 4시30분(현지시간) 이집트 수도 카이로의 마아디 지구 민박집에 한국인 9명이 승합차를 타고 나타났다. 리비아의 신도시 건설 현장에 있던 한국 건축업체 공간의 직원들이었다. 차에서 내리는 순간 피곤이 가득한 얼굴 위로 며칠 만에 처음으로 안전한 곳에 발을 내디딘다는 안도감이 비쳤다.

이들은 지난 20일 오전 9시 리비아 동북부 도시 토브룩에서 12인승 승합차에 올라타고 탈출을 시작했다. 전날 사무실에 괴한들이 침입해 컴퓨터 등의 집기를 모두 약탈해간 데다가 밤마다 총성이 끊이지 않아 대이동을 결심한 것이었다. 은행이 문을 닫아 현금 인출도 안 되고, 식료품 가게가 문을 닫아 식료품조차 구하기 힘든 열악한 상황은 그들의 발걸음을 재촉했다.

이동희(57) 지사장은 “사흘 사이에 관공서 5곳이 불에 타고 민간인 7명이 사망한 상태라 수도 트리폴리에서 귀국행 항공기를 탈 생각으로 일단 서쪽으로 달렸다”고 말했다. 토브룩에서 트리폴리까지의 거리는 1500㎞다. 약 700㎞를 달렸을 때 도로가 봉쇄돼 더 이상 앞으로 나갈 수가 없었다. 다시 갔던 길을 되돌려 토브룩으로 돌아왔다. 약탈을 피하기 위해 주변에 민가가 없는 비포장 도로를 주로 이용했다.

잠시 휴식을 취한 뒤 이번에는 동쪽으로 방향을 잡았다. 출국용 비자(리비아에서는 출국 때도 비자를 받아야 한다)가 없어 육로로 국경 통과가 가능할지 판단이 서지 않았지만 별다른 도리가 없었다. 동쪽 국경의 출입국관리소까지 200㎞를 달리는 도중 네 차례 검문을 당했다.

공사 발주처인 리비아 주택공사에서 발급해 준 통행증 덕분에 다행히 통과할 수 있었다. 그렇게 도착한 국경 출입국관리소에는 직원이 아무도 없었다.

리비아 정부가 이 지역 통제를 포기한 것이었다. 22일 오후 2시, 국경을 지키고 있던 군인들은 외국인 신분만을 확인하고 이집트 땅으로의 길을 열어줬다. 1600㎞의 긴 여정이 끝나는 순간이었다. 이들은 국경을 통과한 뒤 이집트 접경 도시 엘 살룸에서 주이집트 한국대사관이 보낸 승합차에 옮겨 탄 뒤 다시 700㎞를 달려 카이로에 도착했다. 리비아에서 신도시 건설의 감리를 맡았던 이들 중에는 이라크에서 피란한 경험이 있는 김명호씨도 포함돼 있었다. 김씨는 2005년 북부 쿠르드 지역의 유전개발 업체에서 일하다 한국인 납치·피살 사건으로 철수명령을 받았다.

김씨는 “지역 자치정부와 현지 경호원들의 보호를 받을 수 있는 이라크가 리비아보다 훨씬 안전했다”고 말했다. 이 지사장은 “현재 리비아 동북부 지역에도 수백 명의 한국인 기업체 직원이 있다. 우리에게는 다행히 리비아의 주택공사에서 내준 통행허가증이 있었지만 그들은 이조차 없어 통행에 제한을 받을 것으로 예상된다”고 말했다. 9명의 공간 직원은 24일 두바이를 경유해 귀국길에 오를 예정이다.
