Esteemed monk honored today

A daryeje, or remembrance ceremony, will be held at Gilsang Temple, in northern Seoul, today to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the late Buddhist monk Venerable Beopjeong.

The ceremony will be on the exact one-year lunar-calendar anniversary of Beopjeong’s death - he died on Jan. 26 in the lunar calendar last year, March 11 in the solar calendar.

A short video about the life and work of the deceased monk will start the ceremony, followed by speeches by esteemed monks from the Buddhist community.

Ven. Bosung from Songgwang Temple, where Beopjeong once studied, will be the first to speak. He will be followed by Ven. Jaseung, who currently serves as director general of the Jogye Order, the nation’s largest Buddhist organization. The ceremony will continue with a performance by singer No Young-shim, who will play a piece she composed specially for the event.

Beopjeong, one of the most revered Buddhist monks in the nation, battled lung cancer and died in Seoul last year at the age of 78. He was cremated in a ritual at Songgwang Temple in South Jeolla three days after his death. More than 30,000 mourners gathered at the temple last year to pay their respects.

The esteemed monk, who was the author of the best-selling book “Non-Possession” and other works, was known for living a frugal and secluded life with few possessions and encouraged others to do the same.

Before he died, he asked that his books no longer be published because he did not want to leave anything behind after his death. That resulted in a rapid increase in sales of Beopjeong’s books at major bookstores before his death.

His books - which include “Non-Possession,” “Pleasure in Living Alone” and “Words and Silence” - are no longer available at bookstores.

But Buddhist civic group Clean and Fragrant, which solicited book donations from publishing companies, announced Wednesday that it will donate all of Beopjeong to public libraries, army bases, prisons and other public facilities.

“The number of books [we donated] has grown to 80,000,” a spokesman from the group said on Friday.

Sales of Beopjeong’s books ended on Dec. 31.

Since then, the volunteer group has been in discussions with publishing companies about ending the sale of the books and reimbursement of related royalties, the spokesperson said. The group plans to conclude these discussions by March 31, the spokesman said.

“At this time, it is not possible to purchase the books at bookstores,” he said.

Meanwhile, there is a new leader at Gilsang Temple, which Beopjeong founded and served under from 1997 until his retirement in 2003.

The new leader, Ven. Deokun, is the fifth of seven monks who were to have succeeded Beopjeong. He will replace Ven. Deokhyun, who the late monk had appointed in his will to succeed him.

Deokhyun announced his resignation on Feb. 17, when he also resigned as the director of Clean and Fragrant.

In the letter of resignation posted on Gilsang Temple’s Web site, Deokhyun said it was difficult for him, as a person who is accustomed to a life of seclusion, to oversee the temple’s affairs.

Venerable Beopjeong (1932-2010)

Venerable Beopjeong, whose secular name is Park Jae-cheol, was born in Haenam, South Jeolla in 1932, and became a monk in 1954 while he was attending college. He became known to Buddhists and non-Buddhists with the publication of his book “Non-Possession” in 1976, which would be just one of the 30 he published in his lifetime. Beopjeong devoted his life to promoting frugality and nonpossession.

In 1997, he transformed a high-end Korean restaurant into Gilsang Temple following a donation from the restaurant owner, who was deeply moved by the late monk’s teachings.

The late monk remained at the temple until 2003, when he retired. But he continued to be a part of temple life by giving regular sermons until his death last year.

지난해 입적한 법정(法頂) 스님 1주기인 28일을 전후해 다양한 추모행사가 마련된다.

28일 오전 서울 성북구 길상사에서는 추모 법회(다례재)가 봉행된다.

법정 스님은 지난해 3월11일 입적했지만 불교식 전통에 따라 입적한 날의 음력일(1월26일)인 이날 추모 법회가 열린다.

추모 법회는 5분 길이의 추모 영상 상영과 법정 스님의 출가 본사인 송광사의 방장 보성 스님의 추모 법문, 조계종 총무원장 자승 스님의 추모사, 노영심씨가 작곡한 1주기 추모곡 연주 등의 순서로 진행된다.

추모 법회에는 송광사 동당 법흥 스님과 유나 현묵 스님, 주지 영조 스님 등 송광사와 길상사 스님들, 총무원 관계자, 법정 스님의 상좌스님 등 스님 50여명과 일반신자 등 500~800여명이 참석할 예정이다. 최근 길상사 주지직을 사임한 덕현 스님은 참석하지 않을 것으로 알려졌다.

길상사는 생전 스님의 뜻을 좇아 조촐하고 간소하게 추모법회를 치르고 법회 외에 다른 행사는 준비하지 않기로 했다.

각계에서 법정 스님을 기리는 책과 전시 등도 잇따르고 있다.

일간지 기자 출신의 사진작가 근승랑이 2004년부터 지난해까지 법정 스님의 생전 일상을 찍은 사진을 묶은 '비구, 법정'이 발간됐으며 시나리오 작가인 이시현씨는 법정 스님의 생가인 전남 해남 선두리와 땅끝마을, 행자 시절을 보낸 통영 미래사, 비구계를 받은 양산 통도사 등 법정 스님의 자취가 깃든 11곳을 순례한 기록을 담은 책 '법정 기행'을 펴냈다.

관훈동 토포하우스에서는 캘리그라피스트 김성태가 법정 스님의 책 속 문장들을 캘리그래피(손글씨)로 표현한 작품 30여 점으로 '김성태-법정 스님의 죽비소리'전(~3월8일)과 '비구, 법정' 사진집에 실린 사진을 중심으로 법정 스님을 추모하는 사진전(3월2~8일)이 동시에 열린다.

법정 스님의 유지를 받드는 시민모임인 사단법인 '맑고향기롭게'는 스님의 책 중 팔고 남은 책 7만여권을 공공도서관과 군부대, 교도소에 기증하기로 하고 기증 신청을 받고 있다.

전남 순천의 순천문학관에는 법정 스님의 친필 편지글이 전시 중이다. 전시작은 법정스님이 1994년 '맑고향기롭게'를 만들 당시 함께 활동하다 세상을 떠난 동화작가 고(故) 정채봉씨에게 보낸 편지글로 엽서와 일반 편지지, 붓글씨가 든 벽보 등 50여 장의 글을 볼 수 있다.

순천시는 법정스님 입적 1주기를 맞아 오는 28일부터 다음 달 4일까지 법정스님이 머물던 송광사 불일암과 법정 스님의 입적 당시 다비장 등을 둘러보는 관광프로그램을 마련한다.

산문집 '무소유'로 널리 알려진 법정스님은 지난해 3월11일 오후 1시51분께 길상사에서 법랍 55세, 세수 78세로 입적했다.

1932년 해남에서 태어난 그(속명 박재철)는 1959년 3월 양산 통도사에서 자운율사를 계사로 비구계를 받았다. 이후 해인사 선원과 강원, 통도사를 거쳐 1960년대 말 봉은사에서 동국역경원의 불교 경전 번역작업에 참여했다.

스님은 1975년 10월부터 17년간은 송광사 뒷산에 불일암을 짓고 홀로 살았으며 불일암 시절 초반인 1976년 4월 대표적인 산문집 '무소유'를 출간한 이후 불교적 가르침을 담은 산문집을 잇달아 내면서 대중적인 반향을 일으켰다.

1992년부터는 강원도 산골 오두막에서 지내면서 외부와 접촉을 잘 하지 않았지만 1996년 성북동의 요정 대원각을 기부받아 1997년 12월 길상사를 개원한 후에는 정기적으로 대중법문을 들려줬다.

스님은 자신이 창건한 길상사의 회주를 한동안 맡았을 뿐, 주지 한 번 지내지 않는 등 평생 불교의 가르침을 지키는 출가 수행자로서 '무소유'와 '버리고 떠나기'를 실천해 대중의 존경을 받았다.

'무소유'를 비롯해 '산방한담' '텅빈 충만' '물소리 바람소리' '버리고 떠나기' '인도 기행' '산에는 꽃이 피네' '오두막 편지' 등 여러 권의 책을 내며 탁월한 필력을 보였던 스님은 "그동안 풀어놓은 말 빚을 다음 생에 가져가려 하지 않겠다"며 자신의 책을 절판하라는 유언을 남겼고 이에 따라 스님의 책은 품절 사태 이후 지난해말까지만 판매됐다.

한편, 1주기를 앞두고 길상사 덕현 스님이 돌연 주지직을 사퇴했다. 스님의 후임으로는 법정 스님의 다섯째 상좌인 덕운 스님이 거론되며 1주기 행사 이후 후임 주지가 최종 결정될 예정이다.
