배고픈 예술
예술가의 전통적 이미지는 괴팍한 기인(奇人)에 가깝다. “굉장히 열심히 세수도 않고 다니고/때묻은 바바리 코우트의 깃을 세워 올리면서/봉두난발한 머리카락의 비듬을 자랑했거니”(박남철, ‘시인연습’)라는 구절은 괜히 나온 게 아닐 것이다. 술인 줄 알고 남의 집 화장대에서 몰래 향수를 들이켰다는 시인(천상병)부터 아예 자신의 귀 일부를 잘라버린 화가(고흐)까지, 뛰어난 예술가들에겐 온갖 기기묘묘한 일화가 따라다닌다.내가 한 영작

하지만 현실에서 가난은 예술가의 창작을 방해하는 고통일 뿐이다. 최근 지병과 굶주림에 시달리던 30대 시나리오 작가가 월셋방에서 숨진 채로 발견됐다. 지난해 말엔 인디뮤지션 ‘달빛요정역전만루홈런’이 지하 전셋방에서 뇌출혈로 사망했다. 이들의 배고픔 뒤엔 가수가 곡당 몇십원밖에 음원 수익을 나눠받지 못하고, 시나리오를 써도 영화 제작이 안 되면 원고료를 제대로 받을 수 없는 등 창작자를 홀대하는 모순이 있다. 모순이 있는 한 예술가는 춥고 배고프기만 할 뿐 재능을 펼치기란 요원하다. 신들린 듯한 열정만으로 천재가 되는 건 그 옛날 르네상스 시대에서나 가능했던 일일 테니까.

As long as such contradictions persist, it is difficult to expect artists to demonstrate their real talent. The era in which artists could become geniuses with only passion and obsession may now be over.
