Builders bracing for Mideast fallout

Korean construction companies yesterday were closely monitoring the unrest in Libya amid fears that the political turmoil could spread to other countries in North Africa and the Middle East, the single biggest overseas market for the nation

리비아의 정치적 혼란이 한국 건설회사들에게는 가장 큰 단일 해외시장인 북아프리카와 중동 지역 다른 국가들에게 확산될 수 있다는 불안감이 커지는 가운데 한국 건설회사들이 어제 리비아에서 벌어지고 있는 반정부 시위 사태 추이를 예의주시하고 있다.
The entire region accounted for 69.3 percent (worth $47.25 billion) of total construction project orders won by Korean builders last year, according to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra). Construction orders from the region have risen as higher oil prices and economic growth have boosted demand for more refineries and infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Korea was advising its citizens to leave Libya as antigovernment protesters attacked a string of Korean-run construction sites, which were looted, though no casualties were reported. Some Korean construction companies were considering evacuating their employees, though the roads are seen as unsafe and flights out of the country are limited.

한편, 반정부 시위대들이 한국 회사들의 건설현장을 공격하고 약탈하는 (아직 사망자는 보고되지 않았다) 일련의 사건들이 발생해 한국정부는 한국인 근로자들에게 리비아를 떠나도록 권고하고 있다. 몇몇 한국 건설회사들은 직원들을 대비시키는 계획을 고려하고 있다. 그러나 도로망은 안전하지 못하고 항공편은 제한돼 있다.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has designated Libya a "travel restraint" zone, the second-highest of Korea's four-grade travel warning system. The government is considering sending a special flight to Libya to help in a possible evacuation of its citizens.
외교통상부는 리비아를 여행제한지역으로 지정했다. 여행제한지역은 4단계 경고 시스템에서 두 번째로 높은 단계이다. 정부는 한국 근로자들을 대피시키기 위해 리비아에 항공기를 급파하는 방안을 검토 중이다.
According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, telecommunications networks, including telephone and Internet, are strictly controlled by the Libyan government and the construction firms were having problems contacting their workers.
국토해양부에 따르면, 리비아 정부가 전화, 인터넷 등 통신망을 철저히 통제하고 있어 건설회사들이 자사 근로자들과 통신을 유지하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다.
