Lee wins int’l award for ‘green’ initiatives

President Lee Myung-bak was selected as the winner of a prestigious international award for his environmental achievements and will travel to the United Arab Emirates from March 12-14 to accept the honor, the Blue House said yesterday.

Lee was invited by UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the Blue House said.

In addition to accepting the Zayed International Prize for the Environment, Lee and his UAE counterpart will have a summit on March 13 to discuss ways to improve the two countries’ strategic partnership. Economic and energy cooperation as well as construction, the environment and health projects will be discussed at the summit, the Blue House said.

On March 14, Lee will attend the Zayed International Prize award ceremony in Dubai, which is being held to commend his global leadership on environmental issues and sustainable development. Past recipients include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The prize is $500,000, the Blue House said, adding that Lee hasn’t decided what he will do with the money. One of the key events on Lee’s itinerary will be attending the groundbreaking ceremony of a nuclear reactor construction project. South Korea won the deal in 2009 to build the plant in Baraka, 300 kilometers (186.4 miles) west of Abu Dhabi.

He will also visit a Korean special forces contingent deployed at Al Ain. The elite unit was the first from Korea to be deployed to a nonconflict region at the request of a foreign country. The primary mission of the military unit is to help train UAE special forces, conduct joint military drills and protect Koreans in the country in case of emergency.

This will be Lee’s second visit to the oil-rich country since his first visit in December 2009, when word that Korea won the deal came out.

“The trip will provide substantial support for Korean companies’ business” in the UAE, the Blue House said.

UAE 방문기간에..'녹색성장 추진공로 인정 받아'

이명박 대통령이 오는 14일 녹색성장을 추진한 공로를 인정받아 국제환경상을 받는다.

청와대 관계자는 2일 "이 대통령이 제5회 자이드 국제환경상 글로벌 리더십 분야 수상자로 선정됐다"면서 "이번 아랍에미리트(UAE) 공식 방문 기간에 자이드 환경상 사무국이 소재한 두바이에서 14일 수상할 예정"이라고 말했다.

이 관계자는 "녹색성장은 그동안 경제협력개발기구(OECD)와 G20, 유엔환경계획(UNEP) 등의 국제 논의에서 높은 평가를 받아왔다"면서 "이번 자이드 환경상 수상은 우리의 정책이 다시 한번 국제 사회에서 인정받은 것"이라고 밝혔다.

자이드상 사무국 측은 "이 대통령이 환경보호와 경제번영을 동시에 달성하기 위해 제시한 녹색성장이 미래 경제성장의 패러다임으로서 인정된다"면서 "최근의 경제 위기 와중에서도 녹색성장을 적극 추진해 글로벌 신성장 동력 및 일자리 창출에 기여했다"고 평가했다.

자이드 환경상은 사막 국가인 UAE의 녹화사업을 추진한 세이크 자이드 빈 술탄 알 나흐얀 전 대통령의 공적을 기리기 위해 지난 2001년 창설됐으며, 산유국이면서도 석유 이외 대체에너지 분야에 적극적 투자를 하는 UAE가 많은 비중을 두고 국제적으로도 권위가 있는 상으로 알려졌다.

그동안 글로벌 리더십 분야에서 지미 카터 전 미국 대통령과 코피 아난 전 유엔 사무총장, 그로 할렘 브루틀란트 전 세계보건기구(WHO) 사무총장, BBC 방송이 수상자로 선정됐다.

이 대통령은 자이드상 수상으로 받는 상금 50만 달러를 환경 분야에 사용할 계획인 것으로 전해졌다.

앞서 이 대통령은 지난 2010년 생물다양성협약 공로상을, 서울시장 재직 당시에는 청계천 복원과 대중교통 개혁, 시민의 숲 조성 등으로 제9회 베니스국제비엔날레 최우수상(2004년)을 수상한데 이어 세계기술 환경상(2005년), 타임지 환경의 영웅(2007년) 등 각종 국제환경상도 받은 바 있다.
