K-League has new look as 2011 campaign starts

After a whirlwind of winter activity, the 2011 K-League season will kick off this weekend with four matches Saturday and four more Sunday.

And this has been one of the busiest offseasons for the first-division Korean football league since it began in 1983: a new commissioner came on board, a new club was added in the southwestern city of Gwangju to even out the number of K-League teams at 16, and a slew of all-star caliber players switched teams to alter the rivalry landscape.

Football analysts have said defending champion FC Seoul has a great chance to repeat, but the Suwon Samsung Bluewings, the most active club this winter, could mount a strong challenge.

After winning both the K-League and the K-League Cup titles in 2010, FC Seoul didn’t re-sign head coach Nelo Vingada. Instead they hired Hwangbo Kwan, who spent more than a dozen years in Japan as a player, coach and front-office executive. But this year’s FC Seoul will be different from the 2010 squad.

The champions lost three starters to mandatory military service, forward Jung Jo-gook, the team’s second leading scorer in 2010, left to play in France and defensive back Kim Jin-kyu is now in China.

But the team still has fullback Kim Dong-jin and is stacked with foreign talent like leading scorer Dejan Damjanovic, defensive stalwart Adilson dos Santos and midfielder Server Djeparov, a former Asian Football Confederation (AFC) player of the year. Seoul also acquired former Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma midfielder Mauricio Molina, who has 22 goals in 50 K-League appearances so far.

“I think FC Seoul is a confident bunch after winning two titles last year,” said SBS commentator Park Moon-sung. “Leadership by new coach Hwangbo Kwan will only add to the team’s good vibes.”

Suwon, which finished a disappointing seventh a year ago, could spoil Seoul’s attempt at winning its back-to-back championship.

The Bluewings have changed nearly two-thirds of their starting lineup and now boast current or former national team players at every position.

National team goalkeeper JungSung-ryong signed with Suwon as a free agent after leaving Seongnam. And former national team wingers Oh Beom-seok and Oh Jang-eun left the Ulsan Hyundai Tigers to man the Suwon backline. Lee Yong-rae, a hard-working midfielder and a revelation for Korea at the Asian Cup in January, has come in from Gyeongnam FC.

Other Bluewings additions include defender Mato Neretljak, who has rejoined the club after a stint in Japan, and Choi Sung-kuk, who is the team’s new captain following his move from Seongnam.

Shin Yeon-ho, an analyst with cable station SBS ESPN, called Suwon “the best in the league on paper.” Kim Dae-gil, an analyst for KBS, said Suwon is one of two or three teams with a realistic chance at winning the K-League championship.

“Suwon has built such a deep roster that they could field two competitive teams,” Kim said. “I can’t see any holes in their lineup.”

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, which finished third last season, is also viewed as a contender. They mostly stood pat during the offseason but did add forwards Kim Dong-chan and Jeong Seong-hoon to an already high-octane offense that scored the second-most goals in the K-League last year.

While teams battle it out on the pitch, Chung Mong-gyu, the new league commissioner, will have to try to make professional football in Korea relevant again.

The K-League suffered attendance drops in each of the past three seasons, amid the surging popularity of baseball and volleyball. Chung, chairman of Hyundai Development Co., said he had sensed an air of “lethargy and defeatism” in the league and vowed to turn things around.

Each team will play 30 regular season games this year, with the top six teams advancing to the playoffs. The home-and-away championship series is scheduled to end on Dec. 4.

Throughout the season, teams will also play in two auxiliary competitions, the K-League Cup and the FA Cup. Four clubs - Seoul, Jeju, Jeonbuk and Suwon - will compete in the AFC Champions League, a tournament among pro teams across the continent.

올해 ‘공공의 적’은 서울-수원

▶우승 후보는 수원·서울
　
알찬 선수 보강을 한 수원 삼성과 FC 서울이 강력한 우승후보로 꼽혔다. 16명의 감독을 대상으로 한 조사에서 수원이 10표, 서울이 9표를 받았다(복수 응답 허용). 대부분 '객관적인 전력상 두 팀이 가장 앞선다'는 의견을 내놨다. 서울은 데얀·몰리나·제파로프·아디로 구성된 용병 조합이 높은 점수를 받았다. 수원은 정성룡·최성국·이용래·오장은·오범석 등 토종 파워가 다른 팀들보다 월등하다고 평가했다.

수원 윤성효 감독이 우승 후보로 '수원·서울'의 복수 응답을 한 것과 달리 서울 황보관 감독은 '서울'만 답했다. 전북 최강희 감독과 전남 정해성 감독은 자신이 지휘하는 팀을 우승 후보로 꼽았다.

16개 구단 주장의 예측도 비슷했다. 수원이 가장 많은 6표를 받았고 서울이 5표로 뒤를 이었다. 감독과 달리 전북의 우승을 예측한 선수가 4명이나 있었고 울산이 2표, 제주가 1표를 받았다. 한편 정규리그 1위팀을 묻는 질문에도 수원과 서울이 몰표를 받았다. 감독들은 수원·서울(이상 8표), 전북(2표)을 정규리그 1위 팀으로 예상했고 주장들은 서울(7표)·수원(6표)·전북(2표)·울산·인천(이상 1표) 순으로 표를 던졌다.

▶다크호스는 포항·울산　

16개 구단 감독들은 올 시즌 다크호스로 포항과 울산을 지목했다. 포항은 황선홍 감독 체제로 새 출발하고 울산은 설기현·송종국·곽태휘 등을 보강했다. 포항을 지목한 허정무 인천 감독은 "선수층이 좋고 새 감독이 분위기를 장악했다"고 설명했다. 황보관 서울 감독, 안익수 부산 감독 등도 포항을 꼽았다. 울산에 경계심을 나타낸 윤성효 수원 감독은 "선수 보강을 잘 했고 아시아축구연맹(AFC) 챔피언스리그에 출전하지 않는다는 장점이 있다"고 말했다. 최만희 광주 감독, 이영진 대구 감독도 울산에 한 표를 던졌다. 포항·울산에 이어 인천과 전남이 나란히 3표를 받았다. 인천과 전남을 다크호스로 지목한 최강희 전북 감독은 "두 팀 모두 지도자의 능력이 뛰어나고 선수 구성도 만만치 않다"고 말했다. 황선홍 포항 감독도 인천과 전남을 돌풍을 일으킬 가능성이 있는 팀으로 꼽았다. 준척급 K-리거가 대거 입대한 상주 상무도 2표를 받았다. 한편 각 팀 주장들은 부산과 수원(이상 3표)을 다크호스로 지목했다. 상주와 포항, 울산도 2표를 받았다.

▶공공의 적도 서울·수원

16개 구단 감독들이 가장 꺾고 싶어 하는 팀도 우승후보로 꼽혔던 서울(5표)과 수원(3표)이었다. 선수들의 마음은 더했다. 설문에 참가한 9명이 서울을 꼽았고 4명이 수원을 지명했다. 지난해 K-리그와 컵대회 정상에 올랐던 서울과 FA컵 우승팀 수원은 다른 팀들에게 아픔을 많이 줬다. 대구의 수비수 이상덕은 "지난해 서울과 좋은 경기를 펼치고도 2경기를 아쉽게 졌다. 특히 FA컵 8강은 승부차기까지 가서 패해 더 아쉬웠다. 올해는 반드시 서울을 꺾겠다"고 다짐했다. 두 팀 모두 전력이 탄탄한 강팀이다 보니 승부욕을 자극한다는 이야기도 많았다. 허정무 인천 감독은 “수도권에 축구 바람을 일으키고 싶다. 수원과 서울을 이기겠다”고 말했고, 이영진 대구 감독도 "강팀은 모두 한 번씩 잡아보고 싶다"고 밝혔다. 황보관 서울 감독이 꼭 이기고 싶은 팀으로 FC서울을 꼽은 것도 눈길을 끌었다. 그는 “K-리그 2연패와 AFC 챔피언스리그 우승을 우해서는 우리 자신을 이겨야 한다”며 서울을 꼽은 이유를 들었다. 이외에 제주와 전북·울산 등이 꼭 이기고 싶은 팀으로 뽑혔다. 최진한 경남 감독은 “경남은 중요한 길목마다 전북에 패했다. 경남에 부임하고 얼마 되지 않아 식당에 갔는데, 주인아저씨가 전북을 꼭 이겨달라고 부탁했다”며 전북을 반드시 이기겠다고 다짐을 했다.

▶득점왕은 데얀vs지동원

특급 용병들과 호흡을 맞추는 FC서울의 데얀(8표)이 강력한 득점왕 후보로 떠올랐다. 감독 투표에서 2위를 차지한 유병수보다 무려 5표를 더 받았다. 데얀은 지난해 제파로프와 최태욱의 도움으로 후반기에만 9골(시즌 13골)을 뽑아냈다. 올해는 몰리나의 가세로 서울 공격력이 더 강해져 데얀도 골 기회를 더 많이 잡을 전망이다. 왕선재 대전 감독은 “데얀은 K-리그에서 검증을 마친 선수다. 정조국까지 프랑스로 이적해 득점이 데얀에게 몰릴 가능성이 높다”고 예상했다.

직접 경기장에서 함께 뛴 선수들 생각은 달랐다. 지동원을 득점왕 후보로 꼽은 경우가 많았다. 대부분 전남의 전력이 준수하고 지동원 한 명에게 득점이 몰리기 때문이라고 분석했다. 이상덕은 "아직 맞대결을 한 번도 하지는 못했지만 뛰어난 선수라고 들었다. 강력한 득점왕 후보"라며 경계를 늦추지 않았다.
