MB to renominate commission head

President Lee Myung-bak plans to renominate Choi See-joong, the current chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, to serve in the post for another term, a senior political source said yesterday.

Choi, 73, a former head of Gallup Korea, was appointed to the three-year minister-level post in March 2008 to head the Korea Communications Commission as its first chairman. The powerful commission was formed by integrating the former Information Ministry and the Korean Broadcasting Commission under the Lee administration. It has recently overseen the process of selecting new broadcasters.

“We are preparing the document necessary to ask the National Assembly to hold a confirmation hearing,” the source said. “The document will be sent [by] Monday morning.”

Choi’s term officially ends on March 25, and he will have to go through a nonbinding confirmation hearing at the legislature.

The president faced strong opposition when he appointed Choi, one of his most trusted advisers, to the post three years ago.

최시중 방송통신위원장 연임
청와대 청문요청서 국회 제출

이명박 대통령이 최시중(사진) 방송통신위원장의 연임(連任)을 결정했다. 방통위원장 임기는 3년이며 한 차례에 한해 연임할 수 있다.

　홍상표 청와대 홍보수석은 4일 “최 위원장 중임이 결정됐고 오늘 중 행정안전부를 통해 국회에 인사청문요청서가 제출됐다”고 밝혔다. 현 임기가 25일까지인 최 위원장이 연임하려면 국회 인사청문회 관문을 다시 통과해야 한다.

　최 위원장 연임은 오래전부터 예상됐다. 이명박 대통령의 오랜 조언자로 정치적 중량감이 큰 데다, 초대 방통위원장으로서 지난 3년간 조직을 성공적으로 이끌어 왔다는 평가를 청와대와 여권에서 받았기 때문이다. 청와대 관계자는 “최 위원장이 난제 중 난제로 꼽혔던 종합편성·보도전문 채널 선정 작업 등을 원만하게 마무리했고, 과거 방송위의 방송정책 업무와 정보통신부의 통신서비스 정책 업무를 성공적으로 융합한 점 등이 연임 이유”라고 설명했다.

　홍 수석은 “주요 정책을 잘 마무리하라는 뜻도 있다”고 했다. 앞으로 종편·보도채널의 차질 없는 방송 서비스를 비롯, 미디어 산업을 발전시키는 문제와 관련해 최 위원장만 한 적임자가 없다는 게 이 대통령의 판단이라고 청와대 측은 밝히고 있다.

　최 위원장은 연임 사실이 알려진 뒤 기자실을 찾아 “힘든 일을 이어가야 하는구나 하는 무거운 책임을 느낀다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “본격적인 스마트 시대의 등장에 순응하려면 2기 방통위가 해야 할 일이 참 많다”며 ▶통신요금 인하 ▶광고시장 확대 ▶디지털 전환 등을 주요 과제로 꼽았다.
