TEDx conference March 12 at SNU

The knowledge sharing conference, TEDx, which is designed to give communities independently organized opportunities for dialogue at the local level, will be held at Seoul National University (SNU) on March 12 under the theme “Quantum Jump.”

The TED conference, organized by the American nonprofit organization, was established in 1984.

TED holds conferences in the U.S. twice a year, in an attempt to disseminate “ideas worth spreading,” by inviting professionals in technology, entertainment and design.

Currently, the TED conference is being held in Long Beach, California.

In Korea, TEDx Myeongdong was started in 2009, and about 50 conferences have been held nationwide in places like Yonsei University and Sookmyung Women’s University since then.

Six speakers will participate in the TEDxSNU conference including Kwon Do-gyun, head of Primer, a business incubating company; Jeon Seong-min, translator of the book Facebook Era, who is also a doctoral student at the SNU College of Business Administratio.

Professor Jung Ji-hoon, from Kwandong University’s School of Medicine will also speak.

The steering committee for TEDxSNU, composed of 10 SNU students, along with other university members and venture companies in Korea, has been preparing for the event since the end of last year through social network services such as Twitter and Facebook.

The idea of holding such a conference was brought up by a research center of SNU’s College of Business Administration, and members of the steering committee were brought together through Twitter and Facebook.

Excluding the first off-line meeting last December, all preparation meetings were held online.

Speakers were selected through internal discussions after receiving recommendations from experts.

“We have decided to hold the conference to disseminate knowledge of young talents with potentials,” said Kim Myeong-hun, 22, member of the steering committee.

TEDxSNU conference will be held four times.

The first 100 people who make online reservations from 10 p.m. today at www.tedxsnu.com will be able to participate in the conference.

지역행사 TEDx 12일 개최

지식 공유 강연 TED의 지역행사인 ‘TEDx’가 서울대에서 열린다.

　‘테드엑스서울대(TEDxSNU)’ 운영위원회는 12일 서울대 경영대 수펙스홀에서 ‘테크놀로지의 퀀텀점프(Quantum Jump)’라는 주제로 TEDx 행사를 개최할 예정이라고 2일 밝혔다. TED 콘퍼런스가 서울대에서 열리기는 이번이 처음이다.

　TEDx는 TED의 가치를 공유하는 비영리조직이 TED의 승인 아래 독립적으로 개최하는 지역행사다. 한국에서는 2009년 ‘TEDx 명동’ 콘퍼런스를 시작으로 연세대·숙명여대 등 각 대학과 지역에서 50여 차례의 행사가 열렸다.

　서울대 공대와 경영대 학생들을 중심으로 구성된 운영위원회는 지난해 말부터 주로 트위터 등 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 활용해 이번 행사를 준비해 왔다. 김명훈(22·산업공학과 08학번) 운영위원은 “한 사회의 발전은 통찰력을 가진 몇몇 사람의 주도로 폭발적으로 이뤄져 왔다”며 “가능성을 가진 젊은이들이 통찰력을 접할 기회를 만들고자 TEDx라는 지식확산 활동을 하기로 했다”고 말했다.

벤처 인큐베이팅 기업 ‘프라이머’의 권도균 대표와 『페이스북 시대』의 역자 전성민씨, 『거의 모든 IT의 역사』의 저자인 관동의대 정지훈(융합의학) 교수 등 6명이 강연자로 참석한다. 강연자는 각 주제 분야를 대표하는 명사를 전문가들로부터 추천받은 뒤 내부 협의를 거쳐 선정했다. TEDxSNU는 5월 2차 강연회를 영화관에서 여는 등 올해 총 네 차례의 행사를 계획하고 있다.

　누구나 참여할 수 있는 이번 행사는 3일 오후 10시부터 TEDxSNU 홈페이지(www.tedxsnu.com)에서 신청이 가능하며 100명까지 선착순으로 등록할 수 있다.
