Colleges under fire over glitzy welcome

Some private universities in Seoul are under fire for partying too hard.

Schools often invite MCs or idol stars and singers to highlight school events, despite the high cost, which can range from 1 million won ($890) to 8 million won, depending on the entertainer’s popularity.

But such a high-priced custom is embroiled in controversy, as numerous private universities in Seoul have used millions of won to attract celebrities to their freshmen welcoming parties, while numerous students have been pushing for lower tuition rates.

Soongsil University’s student council urged students not to attend the school’s welcoming party for freshmen because the Feb. 28 event was to be held in Jangchung Gymnasium - a sports arena that holds 7,000 people - and famous girl group Sistar and pop singer Psy were scheduled to perform.

Other schools have attracted similar celebrities, with Sookmyung Women’s University inviting rap duo Supreme Team and punk rock band Crying Nut and Sungshin Women’s University inviting popular boy band 2AM.

Despite criticism about university funds going to these events instead of back to students, an official at Soongsil University said that “calling up a famous singer or an idol group dramatically increases participation from students.”

An official at Sookmyung said: “We can’t help but to continue with the custom because it encourages school spirit from trend-conscious freshmen,” and added that it helps spur on active participation from freshmen while increasing their sense of belonging.

The dean of students at one of the private universities said: “Except SKY universities [Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University], other universities have no choice but to open their wallets to hold such parties to keep freshmen from leaving the school.”

The dean added: “The policy of banning freshmen from taking a leave of absence could be seen as ‘sticks’ to stop students from leaving to apply for better universities, and inviting famous celebrities for school events could be seen as offering ‘carrots.’”

As the season for freshmen welcoming parties nears, university Web sites have constantly uploaded articles comparing universities and the guest celebrities they have invited.

숭실대, 가수 불러 ‘1억 입학식’

“예산 부족을 핑계로 매년 등록금을 올리는 학교에서 이런 호화 이벤트에 쓸 돈은 어디서 나오는 겁니까.”

28일 숭실대 입학식 겸 신입생 오리엔테이션이 열린 서울 장충체육관. 이날 행사는 가수 싸이와 걸그룹 씨스타가 초청돼 무대에 오르는 등 화려하게 펼쳐졌다. 하지만 현장에서 만난 학생들은 오히려 불만을 토해냈다. 매년 등록금을 인상하는 학교 측이 1억여원에 달하는 돈을 들여 입학이벤트를 여는 데 반발한 것이다. 숭실대는 교육예산 부족과 학교발전기금 마련을 이유로 올해 등록금을 2.8% 올렸고, 지난해에는 4.8% 인상했다.

박길용 총학생회장(26)은 “학교는 등록금 협상이 진행되던 지난 1월에도 총장과 교직원이 7000만원에 달하는 교비를 지원받아 이슬람과 터키 등지로 성지순례를 다녀왔다. ‘학교 이념을 살리기 위해 다녀왔다’는 학교 측의 해명이 한심하다”고 비판했다.

이향림 법대 학생회장(22)은 “학교가 해야 할 일은 가수의 공연이 포함된 비싼 입학식이 아니라 양질의 수업과 교육 인프라를 구축하는 것”이라며 “신입생들도 학교가 무엇을 잘못하고 있는지 알아야 한다”고 말했다. 총학생회는 행사를 비판하는 유인물을 신입생들에게 나눠 줬다.

장충체육관에 설치된 대형 무대는 다채로운 행사와 유명 연예인의 공연으로 시끄러웠지만 객석은 드문드문 비어 있었다. 학교 측은 당초 3000여명의 학생과 학부모들이 참석할 것으로 예상했으나 객석을 채운 인원은 600여명에 불과했다. 언론홍보학과 김영돈씨(20)는 “사회대·인문대 등 대부분의 단과대가 행사 보이콧을 선언했다”며 “우리 과에서는 후배들이 한 명도 참석하지 않았다”고 말했다.

이날 이벤트를 지켜본 신입생 최모군(19)은 “입학하며 등록금 480만원을 포함해 모두 570만원을 냈다”면서 “이런 돈을 연예인을 부르는 데 지출하다니 이해할 수 없다”고 했다.

숭실대 관계자는 “학교에 학부모와 신입생을 수용할 공간이 모자라기 때문에 체육관을 빌렸다”며 “총학생회도 축제 때 연예인을 부르는데, 입학식에 왜 연예인을 부르면 안된다는 것인지 이해하기 어렵다”고 말했다.
