Lee visits hero captain: ‘Please regain strength’

President Lee Myung-bak visited the wounded captain of the Samho Jewelry, Seok Hae-kyun, who is recovering from injuries sustained during a rescue operation, and expressed his gratitude to Seok for overcoming the throes of death.

According to Hong Sang-pyo, senior presidential secretary of public affairs, Lee told Seok, who is being treated at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, “The Dawn of the Gulf of Aden, [which is the code name for the rescue operation], will finally end when you walk out of the hospital with full strength.”

The 58-year-old heroic captain of the Samho Jewelry, an 11,500-ton chemical cargo ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean on Jan. 15, was wounded during the rescue mission by Korean Navy special forces six days after its captivity.

Busan District Prosecutors’ Office said yesterday that Seok, who recently regained consciousness, currently has no memory of the attack. When asked about remembering the Somali shooters during the prosecutor’s March 1 investigation, Seok said he does not remember, as it was too dark.

Lee expressed his hope for a full recovery soon and gave Seok a naval captain uniform as a gift, adjusting the captain hat on Seok’s head as he urged Seok to “visit the Blue House with the family after getting released from the hospital wearing this uniform.” Lee added that “the public expresses love and hope to your recovery, so please regain your strength.”

▶석 선장=“부담 가지실 필요 없다. 저는 그 배의 선장이다. 선장으로서 해야 할 일을 했다. 선장은 오케스트라 지휘자와 같다. 지휘자가 중심을 잃지 말아야 한다는 정신으로 했다.”

5일 오후 경기도 수원 아주대병원에서 있었던 이 대통령과 석 선장 간의 대화다. 석 선장의 ‘오케스트라 지휘자’ 발언에 이 대통령은 “정말 훌륭하다. 지휘관으로서의 정신이…. 해군 함대 사령관을 해야 될 사람이다”고 탄복했다. 이 대통령은 이날 경기도 과천에서 중앙부처 과장급 공무원 대상 특강을 마친 뒤 석 선장을 찾았다.

이 대통령은 빠른 쾌유를 기원했다. “정말 (문병) 오고 싶었는데 (회복에) 방해가 될까 봐 못 왔다. 빨리 퇴원해 걸어 나와야 (삼호주얼리 구출작전인) 아덴만 여명작전이 끝나는 것”이라고 여러 번 강조했다고 홍상표 청와대 홍보수석이 전했다. 석 선장이 “네, 제가 대통령께 가겠다”고 화답하자 “그래, 그래야 작전이 끝난다. 다 살았는데 지휘자만 이렇게 병실에 있으니…”라고 안타까워하기도 했다.

이 대통령은 “내가 해군으로부터 석 선장이 안에서 큰 작전을 하고 있다는 것을 듣고 우리도 작전을 해도 되겠구나 하고 판단했다”고도 했다.

이 대통령은 선장 예복을 석 선장에게 전달하면서 “퇴원하면 이 예복을 입고 청와대에 가족과 함께 와 달라”고 당부했다.

이 대통령은 석 선장의 부상 회복에 지속적으로 관심을 피력해 왔다. 석 선장 치료를 위해 오만에 급파된 아주대병원 이국종(외상외과) 교수가 석 선장을 한국으로 이송하기 위해 애쓰고 있다는 보고를 임태희 대통령실장과 정진석 청와대 정무수석을 통해 받곤 “모든 지원을 아끼지 말라”고 지시했었다. 석 선장이 귀국한 직후엔 아주대병원 의료진에게 “석 선장이 침대에서 벌떡 일어나게 해 달라”고 당부했다. 이 대통령의 이날 방문엔 임 실장과 정 수석도 동행했다.
