Koreans escape from ‘a living hell’

Koreans who have arrived home after fleeing from Libya have described the situation in the country as a “living hell,” with their offices being looted and dead bodies lying on the streets. A group of 238 Koreans arrived on Saturday night aboard a chartered flight provided by the Korean government, following another 198 who landed on Friday.

리비아를 탈출해 귀국한 교민들이 현지 상황을 사무실은 약탈당하고 시체들이 거리에 나뒹구는 ‘생지옥’이라고 표현했다. 금요일에 한국인 198명이 귀국했고 토요일 밤에 238명이 한국정부가 제공한 전세기를 타고 도착했다.
Kim Seung-hoon, 45, who operated an electronics store in Libya, said his shop was ransacked last week by Libyans wielding steel pipes. Kim said he had lived in that country for more than 20 years. One engineer who worked for a construction group said Libyans “who looked nice in the day changed at night” as they tried to steal construction material and began shooting guns.

리비아에서 전자제품 상점을 운영했던 김승훈(45세)씨는 지난주 리비아인들이 쇠파이프를 휘두르면서 자신의 상점을 약탈했다고 말했다. 김씨는 20년 넘게 리비아에서 살았다고 말했다. 한 건설 기술자는 낮에는 멀쩡해 보이는 리비아인들이 밤에는 총을 쏘고 건설자재들을 훔치는 등 돌변했다고 말했다.
According to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra), the process of getting on the plane was a grueling experience because the Koreans were forced to wait outside Tripoli’s airport along with thousands of other people in chilly weather for roughly three hours.

한국무역진흥공사에 따르면, 다른 사람들 수천 명과 함께 추운 날씨에 거의 세시간 동안 트리폴리 공항 바깥에서 기다려야 하는 등 귀국길에 오른 교민들은 비행기에 타는 과정에서 녹초가 됐다.
Koreans who made it back to Seoul said those gathering at the airport in Tripoli were frightened and wanted to leave the country as soon as possible. They told of Libyan soldiers and police confiscating cameras and cellphone memory chips to prevent the outside world from learning about the chaos in the country.

안전하게 서울에 도착한 교민들은 트리폴리 공항에 모여있는 사람들은 공포에 떨었고 빨리 리비아를 떠나고 싶어했다고 말했다. 외부에 리비아의 혼란상태를 알리지 못하게 하려고 리비아 군인들과 경찰들이 카메라와 휴대전화 메모리칩을 압수해 갔다고 말했다.
The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said yesterday, that as of last night, 509 of the 1,400 Koreans living in Libya are still in the country. Another chartered plane from Egypt Air carrying 60 Koreans from the central Libyan city of Sirte arrived in Cairo yesterday. They were employees from Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction and other companies.
외교통상부는 어제 밤까지 리비아 거주 교민 1천4백명 가운데 509명이 아직 리비아에 남아있다고 밝혔다. 이집트항공사에서 빌린 다른 전세기가 리비아의 중부 도시 시르테에서 교민 60명을 태우고 어제 카이로에 도착했다. 그들은 두산중공업과 다른 한국회사 직원들이다.
