Lee to meet Korean troops in UAE

President Lee Myung-bak will leave for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this weekend to hold a summit with his UAE counterpart, attend a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of nuclear reactors, and meet Korean troops there, according to Lee’s office Blue House.

Lee will be accompanied by First Lady Kim Yoon-ok in the four-day official visit from Saturday, Blue House said.

After his arrival in Abu Dhabi by the presidential jet, Lee will head to the eastern town of Al Ain to meet some 130 Korean troops stationed there, it said. The special forces unit, named “Ahk,” which translates into “brother” in Arabic, was dispatched to the UAE in January for a two-year mission in a show of growing political ties between the two nations.

On Sunday, Lee plans to hold a summit with UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss ways to strengthen ties in various sectors, including the economy, energy, construction, environment and health care, according to the Blue House.

Lee will then attend the “ground-breaking ceremony for initial works at the proposed Braka nuclear power plant site” developed with Korean technology. Braka is located some 300 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi.

Korea and the UAE signed a contract, worth as much as $40 billion, in 2009 to construct four nuclear reactors in the Middle Eastern nation.

The president is scheduled to travel to Dubai on Monday to meet a group of Korean residents and receive the Zayed International Prize for the Environment in recognition of his support for global green growth. Lee will return to Seoul next Tuesday.

The trip will be Lee’s second visit to the UAE after taking office in 2008. He made the previous trip in December 2009.

李대통령, 오늘 UAE 공식방문

원전 기공식 참석..파병부대도 방문

이명박 대통령과 부인 김윤옥 여사가 12일 사흘 일정으로 아랍에미리트(UAE)를 공식 방문한다.

이 대통령은 이날 전용기편으로 아부다비에 도착, 알 아인 UAE 특수전학교를 방문해 교육 훈련 지원 임무를 수행 중인 아크 부대원들을 격려할 예정이다.

이어 13일 양국 기업인들이 만나는 `비즈니스 카운슬`에 참석한 뒤 UAE 대통령궁에서 칼리파 빈 자이드 알 나흐얀 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 양국 전략적 동반자 관계의 발전 이행 상황을 점검하고 경제.에너지 협력 증진 방안을 협의한다.

이 대통령은 14일에는 아부다비 서쪽 해안의 브라카에서 열리는 한국형 원자력발전소 기공식에 참석, 부지 조성 및 방파제 축조 상황 등을 살펴볼 예정이다.

또 모하메드 빈 라시드 알 막툼 연방총리 겸 두바이 통치자와 면담하고 자이드 환경상 수상식에 참석해 글로벌 녹색성장을 주제로 연설한 뒤 수행 기자단과 간담회를 갖는다.

이 대통령의 UAE 방문은 지난 2009년 12월 원전 수주 때에 이어 두 번째다
