Assassin from North suspected in Seoul death

The 75-year-old mother of the secretary general of the Korea Parent Federation, an anti-North Korea civic group, was found dead Thursday after she was struck in the head by a blunt weapon. Police suspect that an assassin from North Korea could have murdered her.

According to Seoul Gangbuk Police, the woman, surnamed Han, was found dead at around 3:20 p.m. on Thursday inside a grocery store she ran in Mia-dong, northern Seoul. An owner of a nearby grocery store found her and called 119.

Han’s head was bleeding after being struck with a blunt instrument, police said, resulting in a 3-centimeter (1.2-inch) wound. She was found lying face down on the floor.

“It’s strange that she was killed in broad daylight in a store that many people passed by,” said her son Chu Seon-hui, secretary general of the Korea Parent Federation. “She was living alone in the store.”

The federation was planning to release about 200,000 balloons filled with leaflets from Imjingak Pavilion in Paju, Gyeonggi, just south of Panmunjom, toward North Korea today. The organization canceled the launch after the murder.

North Korea sent a warning to South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense on Feb. 27 that it would retaliate if Seoul continued psychological warfare campaigns, including sending balloons into the North.

Police said that an ordinary robber could have killed the woman because they only found coins in the store’s cash box.

Police said the woman’s body was being inspected by the National Forensic Service.

‘대북전단’ 간부 모친 피살…경찰, 테러 가능성 수사

전단 살포 이틀 앞두고 당해
목걸이 등 귀중품은 그대로

‘대북 전단 날리기’ 행사를 주도해온 보수단체 간부의 어머니가 피살된 채 발견돼 경찰이 수사에 나섰다.

서울 강북경찰서는 “10일 오후 3시20분쯤 서울 강북구의 한 슈퍼마켓 안에서 주인 한모(75·여)씨가 숨져 있는 것을 인근 상점 주인이 발견해 신고했다”고 11일 밝혔다. 숨진 한씨는 보수단체인 대한민국어버이연합 사무총장 추모(52)씨의 어머니로 확인됐다. 경찰에 따르면 한씨는 발견 당시 둔기로 머리 뒤쪽을 맞아 상처를 입은 채 엎어져 있었다. 처음 신고한 상점 주인 박모씨는 “가게에 들어가보니 한씨가 피를 흘린 채 쓰러져 있었고 벽에는 피가 묻어 있었다”고 진술했다.

한씨의 유족들에 따르면 이날 오후 2시30분쯤 한씨가 “TV가 안 나온다”며 애프터서비스센터에 전화를 했고 수리 직원이 2시45분쯤 가게를 찾아왔다가 인기척이 없어 돌아갔다고 한다. 이에 따라 경찰은 한씨가 이날 오후 2시30분~3시20분 사이에 사망했을 것으로 추정하고 있다. 경찰 관계자는 “범인이 가게 내부를 뒤진 점 등을 볼 때 단순 강도 사건일 가능성이 있다”고 말했다. 경찰은 한씨의 겉옷 주머니가 뒤집힌 흔적이 있고 돈을 보관하던 종이 상자에 동전만 남아 있었던 점, 장롱이 열려 있었던 점 등을 그 근거로 꼽고 있다. 그러나 경찰은 어버이연합이 그동안 북한 정권을 강하게 비판해왔고, 12일 전단 살포를 앞두고 한씨가 살해된 점, 귀중품인 목걸이를 가져가지 않은 점 등으로 볼 때 테러일 가능성도 배제하지 않고 있다.

경찰 관계자는 “단순 강도 사건으로 단정하기에는 분명히 석연치 않은 점이 있다”고 말했다. 추 사무총장 역시 11일 경찰 조사를 받은 뒤 “얼마 전 경찰 정보과 형사로부터 ‘신변을 조심하라’는 얘기를 듣기도 했다”고 주장했다. 경찰은 현장에서 범인의 것으로 보이는 지문과 남성 신발 자국을 발견해 정밀감식을 의뢰했고 인근 주민들을 상대로 탐문조사를 벌이고 있다.

한편 보수단체들은 12일 경기도 파주 임진각에서 대북전단 20만 장을 살포하려던 계획을 취소하고 경찰 수사 상황을 지켜보고 있다. 어버이연합 측은 “좌파 척결과 대북 전단 살포를 주도하고 있는 우리를 표적으로 한 테러라는 의구심이 든다”고 밝혔다. 이 단체의 한 간부는 “추 사무총장이 이전부터 협박을 많이 받아왔다”면서 “좌파 단체나 북한 쪽에서 계획적인 테러를 저지른 것 같다”고 주장했다.
