ⓐAnimal welfare
In 2007, American animal rights activists launched a boycott campaign against ⓑKFC. The reason was that chickens were slaughtered by an electric shock which was inhumane to defenseless animals. ⓒThen, Burger King quickly announced, “We will slaughter chickens not by an electric shock, but by gas which will make them sleep.” McDonald went a step further by declaring that it would increase the space of breeding farm so that chicken would not be stressed. This is animal welfare theory. In his book “Supercapitalism,” Robert Reich, a professor at University of California at Berkeley, criticized the so-called humanitarian slaughter of McDonald calling it a technique that reduces the wounded people while getting more meat.

ⓐWriting the Wrongs in Animal Slaughter
In 2007, American animal rights activists launched a boycott campaign against ⓑKFC to protest the slaughter of chickens by electric shock, which was deemed inhumane to animals. ⓒShortly thereafter, Burger King announced they would slaughter their chickens by first gassing them to put them to sleep. McDonald’s was next to take action. It declared it would give chickens more space so they’d feel less stress. In his book “Supercapitalism,” Robert Reich, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and former U.S. Labor Secretary, criticized McDonald’s purported “humanitarian” slaughter as a technique that reduces employee injuries while producing more meat.

ⓑ KFC. The reason was that chickens were slaughtered by an electric shock which was inhumane to defenseless animals. → to protest the slaughter of chickens by electric shock, which was deemed inhumane to animals.

Animal welfare is ⓐthe topic of conversation now, as some 3.4 million ⓑcattle and pig are ⓒburied to prevent the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease. There are suggestions such as breeding space per head should be regulated, that animal should be slaughtered with minimum pain and that incineration should be used, instead of burial, to dispose animal remains. But the animals may hate the quarantine authorities and feel sorry to the meat-eating habit of human beings.

Animal welfare is ⓐa hot topic these days, as some 3.4 million ⓑcows and pigs are ⓒbeing buried to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Some have suggested that breeding space should be regulated, that animals should be slaughtered with minimal pain and that incineration should be used, instead of burial, to dispose of animal remains. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if the animals hated the quarantine authorities.
