ISU worlds postponed following earthquake

The 2011 World Figure Skating Championships will not be held in Japan this month, following the massive earthquake in Japan last week, Reuters reported Monday.

An ISU statement said it would be impossible to stage the event in Tokyo as planned, due to “the continued critical developments in Japan” and that the ISU was still evaluating whether to postpone or simply cancel the event.

Organized by the International Skating Union, the world championships were to be held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo from March 21-27.

The governing body of figure skating said on Sunday that ongoing developments in Japan were “very worrisome” and that it would monitor the situation along with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF).

The world figure skating championships were canceled in 1961 when a plane carrying the U.S. skating team crashed on its way to Prague, killing all skaters on board.

The postponement is likely to throw off the spring schedule of Korean figure-skating star Kim Yu-na, who would have made her first competitive appearance in about a year.

Kim, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and the 2009 world champion, hasn’t competed since last year’s worlds, where she finished second to Mao Asada of Japan. After parting with coach Brian Orser in August, Kim teamed up with Peter Oppegard and has set her short program to the ballet “Giselle” and her free skating routine to a compilation of traditional Korean music called “Homage to Korea.”

After the worlds, Kim, in her capacity as an honorary ambassador, had been scheduled to join the 2018 Winter Olympics bidding committee for Pyeongchang, in Gangwon.

Pyeongchang is scheduled to give presentations through April and May, including the official bid-city briefing at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, from May 18-19.

PyeongChang is up against Munich and Annecy, France, and the host city will be decided at the IOC General Assembly on July 6 in Durban, South Africa.

Kim also announced last week that she would have an ice show in Seoul from May 6-8. Kim has yet to make any scheduling changes.

All That Sports, her Seoul-based agency, said it will adjust the skater’s schedule according to the ISU’s official announcement.

'김연아 복귀' 3월 도쿄 피겨대회 무산

국제빙상경기연맹 '연기·취소 여부는 추후 결정'

'피겨 여왕' 김연아(21·고려대)가 복귀하는 무대가 될 것으로 예상됐던 이달 하순의 도쿄 피겨스케이팅 세계선수권대회가 일본을 강타한 지진 탓에 예정대로 열리지 못하게 됐다.

오타비오 친콴타 국제빙상경기연맹(ISU) 회장은 "오는 21~27일 열릴 예정이었던 도쿄 피겨 세계선수권대회를 정해진 기간에는 치르지 않기로 했다"고 연맹 홈페이지를 통해 발표했다.

친콴타 회장은 그러나 "대회를 연기할지, 아니면 아예 취소할지는 더 논의해 결정하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

대회를 주관하는 ISU는 지난 11일 강진이 발생한 직후 "대회 개최에 문제가 없다"는 일본빙상연맹 측의 말을 근거로 강행 쪽에 무게를 실어 왔으나, 후쿠시마 원전 폭발 사고가 일어나는 등 예상보다 피해가 커지면서 기존 입장을 바꿨다.

애초 교도통신과 닛칸스포츠 등 일본 언론은 이날 오후 대회가 연기되는 쪽으로 가닥이 잡혔다고 전했지만, ISU는 여전히 취소할 가능성을 남겨놓았다.

이는 대회를 4~5월로 연기하더라도 피해가 커 정상적으로 치를 수 있을지 확신하지 못하기 때문으로 풀이된다.

만약 5월 이후로 대회가 미뤄진다면 9월 말 시작되는 다음 시즌에까지 영향을 줄 수 있어 ISU는 대회 일정을 새로 짜는 데 신중하게 접근할 것으로 예상된다.

ISU는 이날 발표에서 "이 결정은 4월 14~17일 요코하마에서 열릴 예정인 월드 팀 트로피 대회에도 적용된다"고 밝혀 4월 대회 개최도 어려울 것임을 시사했다.

ISU의 최종 결론은 3월 말쯤에나 나올 것으로 보이며, 그러면 대회를 연기하더라도 4월 하순 이전에는 열리기 어려울 전망이다.

대한빙상경기연맹 관계자는 "ISU가 깊게 고민하는 것 같다"면서 "최종 결론은 3월 말쯤이나 나올 것 같다"고 내다봤다.

이 관계자는 "엔트리 교체 등이 이뤄질 수 있는 만큼 적어도 3주 전에는 새 일정을 알려줘야 한다"고 덧붙였다.

이와 관련, 김연아의 매니지먼트사인 올댓스포츠는 "확실한 일정을 발표해야 그에 맞춰 조정할 수 있다. 추가 발표가 날 때까지 기다릴 수밖에 없다"고 밝혔다.
