Koreans, foreigners flock to leave Japan

Koreans and other foreign nationals residing in Japan are embarking on an exodus from the earthquake-stricken country amid fears that leaked radioactivity from nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture could spread to other regions in Japan.

Yesterday, the two major airports in Tokyo, Haneda and Narita, were filled with foreigners waiting for planes to take them out of Japan, many of them without reservations.

“I can cope with earthquakes because I am accustomed to them here, but radioactivity? That’s too much,” said a Korean woman in her 40s. “I will return to Korea with my children and then see how the situation develops here over the next 15 days or so.”

Ticket prices are rising quickly because of the surge in the number of people trying to leave Japan.

“Every flight leaving Tokyo is fully booked now and dozens of customers have to turn around and go home after failing to get seats,” said an official at Asiana Airlines.

One Indian man at the airport said the Indian firm he works for ordered him and 250 other employees at the Tokyo branch and their families to leave Japan yesterday.

A Japanese lawyer working in the Tokyo office of an American law firm said, “Many western lawyers have already returned to their home countries saying they’re taking business trips.”

Meanwhile, Korean residents in Japan are complaining that the Korean government isn’t doing enough to help them out of the country.

There are around 1,800 Koreans in Fukushima and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued an evacuation warning to them yesterday.

The Chinese Embassy in Japan is sending dozens of buses to the four prefectures near the nuclear plant on a daily basis and moving Chinese nationals to airports to be extricated.

“We need to save anxious Chinese people first,” said a Chinese Embassy official in Tokyo. “The cost of transportation comes later.”

Seoul is also being criticized for not focusing on the hundreds of Koreans who are unaccounted for.

Korean online forums had numerous posts on missing Koreans as of yesterday.

In one post, the writer said her cousin hasn’t been reached since he went to a beach in Sendai with college friends on Friday.

“Why couldn’t he have been there on one of the other 364 days of the year?” she said in the post.

일본 역사상 최악의 대지진으로 동북부 일부 지역이 쑥대밭이 된 가운데 일본 거주 교민의 '탈출' 조짐이 일고 있다.

특히 여진이 끊이지 않고 원전이 잇따라 폭발하는 등 일본 전역으로 불안감이 확산하면서 귀국행 항공편을 서둘러 구하려는 교민들이 점차 늘어나고 있다.

14일 항공업계에 따르면 아시아나항공의 15일자 일본 도쿄발 한국행 항공편의 예약률은 하네다~김포 노선이 100%, 나리타~인천 노선이 99%를 기록했다.

도쿄에서 우리나라로 들어오는 노선이 사실상 '만석'을 기록한 것이다.

반면, 김포발 하네다행과 인천발 나리타행 노선은 각각 76%, 62%의 예약률을 보였다.

지진이 발생하기 전 평상시 우리나라와 도쿄를 오가는 왕복 노선이 평균 80%가 넘는 예약률을 보인 점을 고려하면 도쿄에서 한국으로 오려는 사람들은 넘쳐나는 데 그 반대 방향으로 가는 사람들은 줄어든 셈이다.

이런 현상은 이날도 마찬가지였다. 하네다발 김포행 항공편은 100% 예약률을 보였고, 나리타발 인천행 항공편은 96%의 예약률을 보였다. 김포발 하네다행은 68%, 인천발 나리타행은 62%의 저조한 예약률을 나타냈다.

보통 탑승률은 예약률과 비슷하게 나온다.

지난 2월 한 달간 우리나라로 오려는 아시아나항공 도쿄(나리타/하네다)발 항공편 탑승률은 평상시와 비슷한 수치인 86.2%, 그 반대 노선은 82.2%를 기록했다.

대한항공의 경우 이날 나리타~인천 노선 탑승률은 80%, 하네다~김포 탑승률은 83%였다. 반면 인천~나리타 탑승률은 55%, 김포~하네다 탑승률은 35%에 불과했다.

한국행 노선 탑승률이 평소와 비슷한 80%대를 보인 것은 사전에 예약한 일본인들이 미처 예약을 취소하지 못한 것일 가능성이 크다는 게 대한항공 측 설명이다.

15일의 경우 도쿄발 한국행 항공편은 모두 100%의 예약률을 보였고, 16일과 17일도 대부분이 만석인 가운데 간혹 80~90%의 예약률을 보인 편명이 눈에 띈다.

그러나 한국발 도쿄행 항공편은 15일에는 80~90%, 16일엔 69~96%, 17일엔 75~100%의 예약률을 보여 한국행보다 저조한 예약률을 보였다.

이처럼 한국행 항공권은 동난 대신 일본행 항공권은 여유를 보이는 것은 지진으로 인한 불안심리를 반영하고 있다는 게 항공업계의 분석이다.

한 항공사 관계자는 "현지에서 귀국 항공권을 구하지 못해 서울의 가족들이 항공사로 직접 표를 구하려는 문의가 급증하고 있다"고 말했다.
