Real breaks last 16 hoodoo, Chelsea moves on

Real Madrid ended a seven-year wait to reach the Champions League quarterfinals by beating Lyon 3-0 on Wednesday, while Chelsea drew 0-0 with FC Copenhagen to seal their place in the next round with a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Nine-time champion Real Madrid, eliminated in the last 16, six seasons in a row, prevailed thanks to goals from Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria.

“The bad run had to end sometime and it did tonight,” said Real coach Jose Mourinho, a European champion with Inter Milan last season.

“We won both games and deserved to go through as we were the better side,” Mourinho added.

With Benzema’s goal in the first leg securing Madrid a 1-1 draw, they took the lead in the 37th minute when Brazilian left-back Marcelo skipped through the Lyon defense to score.

Benzema and Di Maria capitalized on hesitancy in the visiting back four in the second half to complete the victory, their first over Lyon in eight attempts, and nudge Real a step closer to a record 10th title.

“We did what the manager wanted and went out to win the game,” said Marcelo. “This victory gives us a lot of confidence and we owe it to the Madrid fans.

“We are not thinking about who we could get in the next round. We will just wait for the draw and see,” Marcelo added.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg, Chelsea kicked off their game at Stamford Bridge within touching distance of the last eight but received a shock when Copenhagen forward Dame N’Doye curled a free-kick against the woodwork.

But the English champions largely dominated the encounter and came closest to a winning goal in the second half when John Obi Mikel headed against the crossbar from a Nicolas Anelka flick-on.

“We didn’t need to score tonight in any case as we had already won 2-0,” said Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti.

“We had a lot of opportunities, I think it was 24 shots, and didn’t take them but I am not worried,” Ancelotti added.

Real and Chelsea will discover the identities of their quarterfinal opponents when the draw for the last eight is made on Friday.

스페인 프로축구 프리메라리가 명문구단 레알 마드리드가 '리옹 징크스'를 털어내고 8년만에 유럽축구연맹(UEFA) 챔피언스리그 8강에 올랐다.

레알 마드리드는 17일 새벽(한국시간) 마드리드의 산티아고 베르나베우 스타디움에서 열린 2010-2011 UEFA 챔피언스리그 16강 2차전 올랭피크 리옹(프랑스)과의 홈경기에서 마르첼로와 카림 벤제마, 앙헬 디마리아의 연속골로 3-0 완승을 거뒀다.

지난달 23일 1차전 원정 경기에서 1-1로 비겼던 레알 마드리드는 이날 승리로 1-2차전 득점 합계 4-1로 2003-2004년 시즌 이후 7년만에 8강 진출에 성공했다.

앞서 리옹과 챔피언스 리그 무대 맞대결에서 7경기 연속 무승(4무3패)의 수모를 당했던 마드리드는 지긋지긋했던 '리옹 징크스'도 떨쳐냈다.

크리스티아누 호날두와 벤제마, 메수트 외질, 디마리아 등으로 공격진을 꾸린 레알 마드리드는 홈 팬들의 응원을 등에 업고 초반부터 리옹을 거세게 몰아쳐 전반 37분 선제골을 넣었다.

호날두와 패스를 주고받으며 페널티 지역 안으로 쇄도한 수비수 벤제마가 상대 수비진을 절묘한 발재간으로 제치고 왼발 슛을 때려 리옹의 골망을 갈랐다.

후반 들어 공세를 더 날카롭게 벼른 레알 마드리드는 벤제마와 디마리아의 추가골로 승부에 쐐기를 박았다.

리옹에서 주전 공격수로 뛰다가 2009년 레알 마드리드로 이적한 벤제마는 후반 21분 페널티 지역 왼쪽에서 잡은 골키퍼와 일대일 기회를 놓치지 않고 침착하게 오른발 슛을 성공시켜 친정팀의 추격 의지에 찬물을 끼얹었다.

후반 31분에는 외질의 헤딩 패스를 받은 디마리아가 왼발 슈팅으로 다시 한번 리옹 골망을 흔들어 사실상 승리를 확정지었다.

이후 마드리드는 주전들을 교체하는 여유를 보이며 승리를 만끽했다.

한편 첼시(잉글랜드)는 FC 코펜하겐(덴마크)을 제치고 8강 대열에 합류했다.

첼시는 같은 시각 영국 런던의 스탬퍼드 브리지에서 치른 2차전 홈경기에서 경기 내내 우위를 점하고도 득점 없이 0-0으로 비겼지만 지난달 1차전 원정에서의 2-0 승리에 힘입어 8강 진출에 성공했다.
