Habitat Korea, others helping Japan

Relief aid is flowing into Japan from around the world in the form of money, necessities and manpower. And now, another organization is stepping up to help. Habitat for Humanity Korea, part of the international organization that builds homes for people in need, is joining the effort.

Habitat for Humanity Korea received an e-mail yesterday from the Japan branch, asking for information on how the Korean branch had built temporary houses for residents in Gangwon when they lost their homes in floods in 2006. Back then, the Korea branch built 50 temporary houses.

“As soon as we receive detailed requirements from Habitat Japan, we’ll provide materials, technique and know-how,” said Seo Gyeong-pyo, 59, head of Habitat for Humanity Korea. “We’ll start recruiting volunteers soon to help build houses and remove rubble in Japan,” he added.

Currently, two workers from Habitat for Humanity Asia Pacific are examining damaged areas in Japan to determine what kind of help it needs.

As a starter, Habitat Korea began fund-raising efforts yesterday. The campaign is being organized with SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile phone operator, and will run until April 6. Individuals can send donations of 1,000 won ($0.88) by texting a message to the number *5004.

In the meantime, relief aid continues to flow into Japan, ranging from humanitarian relief such as food and water to donations from all walks of life.

Along with numerous Hallyu, or Korean Wave, stars, JYJ, a spin-off group from the famous TVXQ, donated 600 million won to World Vision on Wednesday. JYJ, which has fervent Japanese fans, said it will put the spotlight on Japan’s plight during its world tour that starts next month in Thailand to help boost donations.

“So many of our fans are from Japan, so donating money is a must, not even an issue to consider,” said JYJ in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo.

YG Entertainment, an agency representing idol groups including Big Bang and 2NE1, donated 500 million won, while girl group Kara, is donating all its earnings of its third single “Jet Coaster Love,” which was released on Wednesday in Japan.

Three major groups representing Korea’s cartoon world, the Korea Cartoonist Association together with the Cartoon and Animation Society in Korea and the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, are collecting donations along with cartoons bearing messages of condolences and sympathy. The proceeds will be sent to the Japan Cartoonists’ Association.

NC Soft Japan, Korea’s largest Internet game maker’s Japan branch, said on its Web site that it has “decided to donate 500 million yen, which is equivalent to sales for a month,” and that the “decision was made to share our customers’ sense of bereavement.”

The amount of the donations from NC Soft is reported to be the highest contribution among domestic companies.

Meanwhile, E-Land Group, one of Korea’s biggest fashion retailers, said on Wednesday that it will provide 6,000 blankets, 150,000 items of clothing and 23,000 relief kits to Japan.

The donation drive has also spurred individual Koreans to help out. According to Community Chest of Korea, around 240 million won has been accumulated as of Wednesday from individuals nationwide. Just on Wednesday alone, 150,000 people participated in the donation, the group said.
