The entire world is shocked by the cataclysmic earthquake/ 전 세계가 일본의 대지진으로 큰 충격을 받고 있다./ that hit Japan last week./ 지난주 일본을 강타한/ First of all,/ 우선/ the world is astounded by the immense damage/ 세계는 엄청난 피해에 크게 경악하고 있다./ the earthquake has inflicted on the country./ 대지진으로 일본이 입은/ At least 2,000 people are already dead and more than 10,000 are still missing. 적어도 2,000여명이 사망하였고 10,000여명이 아직도 행방불명 상태다./ The meltdown of nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture has also raised serious concerns around the world./ 후쿠시마에 있는 원자로시스템의 고장으로 전 세계가 걱정하고 있다./

But the Japanese government has successfully evacuated about 210,000 residents/ 그러나 일본 정부는 21만 명을 성공적으로 대피시켰다./in the area the nuclear power plant/ 원자력 발전소(원전) 인근 주민/ and taken emergency measures to cool the overly heated reactor,/ 그리고 과열된 원자로를 식히는 비상조치를 취했다./ which will help them avert a much bigger tragedy./ 더 큰 참사를 피할 수 있도록/

More surprising, however,/ 그러나 더욱 놀라운 것은/ is the way the Japanese are coping with the colossal disaster,/ 일본인들이 대재앙을 대처하는 자세다./ as they do not appear to be shaken,/ 전혀 흔들리지 않고,/ even by the fear of death./ 죽음의 공포 앞에서도/ Japanese citizens escaped from the shattered area/ 주민들은 피해현장에서 대피했다./ carefully guided by professional evacuation staff./ 전문 대피요원들의 용의주도한 안내로/ Even the stopped bus and subway system couldn't dampen their will to survive the calamity/ 일본인들은 지하철, 버스가 끊였음에도 재앙에서 살아 남으려는 강한 의지로/ as they walked for hours to reach their homes./ 몇 시간을 걸어서 집으로 돌아갔다./ And the next morning, people went to work as if nothing had happened the day before./ 그리고는 다음날 아침 전날에 아무 일도 없었다는 듯 직장에 출근했다./
The world has often witnessed indescribable contusion and disorder/ 우리는 상상을 초월하는 혼란과 무질서를 목격해 왔다./ following natural disasters in other countries./ 세계 여러 곳에서 자연 재해가 지나간 후/ Some pundits say that the looting and violence that arises after disaster are scarier than the disaster itself./ 일부 인사들은 자연 재앙보다 뒤따르는 무법천지의 약탈과 폭력이 더 무섭다고까지 말한다.

But this was not the case in Japan./ 그러나 일본에서는 대지진을 틈타 폭력이나 약탈이 일어났다는 사건은 들리지 않는다./ The Japanese people’s calm and orderly reaction to the unexpected crisis is fully deserving of our compliments as well as our envy./ 순식간에 일어난 대 재앙에 일본사람들이 차분하고 질서 정연하게 대처하는 모습은 우리를 감동시키고 부러움을 사기에 충분하다./ Television broadcast around the world showed hardly any images of crying or screaming Japanese./ 전 세계 TV 화면에는 통곡하거나 울부짖는 일본인들의 모습을 보기 어렵다./ In the face of nature’s fury,/ 자연 재해 앞에서도/ each survivors patiently waited in line to receive emergency food./ 생존자들은 차분히 줄을 서서 차례차례 비상식량을 받는다./

The japanese people’s response to the calamity/ 일본 사람들의 참상에 대한 차분한 대처는/ is not only explained by architectural designs meant to guard against such disasters./ 지진피해에 대비한 건물의 내진 설계만으로는 설명할 수 없다./ Disaster education and constant evacuation drills were major factors in their response./ 일본사람들의 침착한 대처는 재앙에 대한 사전 교육과 꾸준한 대피 훈련이 큰 몫을 했을 것이다./ It shows that a great nation proves its character only when faced with an apocalypse./ 위대한 민족은 위기에 직면하여 그 참모습이 드러난다는 사실을 일본사람들은 보여 주었다./

The scenes from Japan naturally remind us/ 이와 같은 일본사람들의 모습이 우리를 돌이켜 보게 하는 것은/ of our own equally disgraceful response to tragedy/ 재난에 대처하는 우리의 부끄러운 모습이다. - crowds wailing loudly whenever disaster has occurred./ 재앙이 발생하면 많은 사람들이 대성통곡하는 모습을 우리는 본다./ Even when flights are temporarily delayed,/ 비행기가 잠시 연착해도/ we stamped to the airlines to complain about it in chorus./ 승객들은 때지어 몰려가 이구동성(한목소리)로 야단 법석 친다./ And whenever a mishap takes place,/ 또한 조그만 사고가 발생해도/ we prefer to blame the government./ 정부를 탓하기가 일쑤이다./

We hope the Japanese people’s reaction will teach us a lesson./ 우리는 이번 자연재해에서 일본사람들이 보여준 모습에서 본받기를 바란다./ We still have a lot to learn from Japan/ 일본으로부터 배워야할 점도 많고/ and a long way to go before we become a mature, developed country./ 성숙한 선진국으로 가야 할 길도 멀다./
