Nearly one year has passed since the sinking of the South Korean corvette, Cheonan, on March 26, which killed 46 sailors onboard. North Korea was blamed for torpedoing the ship, which it vehemently denies to this day. An investigation was launched by the government, led by a group of South Korean military authorities and private scholars that concluded the military corvette had been sunk by a North Korean torpedo.

Despite the weeks they spent studying the ship and torpedo pieces fished out of the ocean after the accident, not all Koreans have been convinced by the investigation’s findings. A multinational group of experts from the U.S., Britain, Australia and Sweden also concluded last May that the corvette had been torpedoed by North Korea.

Although the issue was brought to the UN Security Council, which released a statement criticizing the attack, opposition from China and Russia prevented the UNSC from condemning North Korea directly.

Some South Korean Internet users did not agree with the Korean and international investigation results. Numerous posts appeared on popular South Korean Internet portal sites claiming that the Cheonan sinking had been a hoax created by the South Korean and U.S. governments. Others asserted that the corvette had hit an aged explosive device left over from the Korean War or, more simply, an underwater boulder.

These doubts led the head of the investigative group to complain to the public about the lack of trust in their results. A recent meeting with the press held with the survivors of the accident showed that the remaining 58 sailors struggled most from “exaggerated stories” about the sinking.

A year after the accident, there are still doubts within the Korean public about what happened in the Yellow Sea on that fateful night last March.

A recent survey conducted by the JoongAng Ilbo marking the one-year anniversary showed that only 47 percent of South Koreans in their 30s believe the results of the investigation. A majority of those surveyed, or 67.9 percent, said they believe the results, while 90.9 percent of citizens aged 60 or over had the same response.

Apart from the public, academic experts are still in disagreement over the official investigation results. One professor who teaches physics at the University of Virginia, Lee Seung-hun, insists that the investigation was fabricated by South Korean authorities.

Lee and another professor, Suh Jae-jung at Johns Hopkins University, said last year that they had studied the investigation carried out by the South Korean investigation group. They said they had found “inconsistencies” and demanded a reinvestigation.

“I asked [the team] for samples and they said they had none left after their experiment,” Lee said to the JoongAng Ilbo. “Samples remain even after experiments. They can carry out another experiment to prove that I am wrong, but they won’t do it. They won’t give me samples, and since they won’t do another experiment they are unable to refute me.”

The professor also spoke out against claims made last year against him and Suh by another South Korean professor from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Song Tae-ho, a professor of mechanical engineering at KAIST had said last year that Lee and Suh’s findings regarding their analysis of aluminum residue were in the wrong. Song had claimed that the “No. 1” found inscribed in Korean on the bottom of a torpedo fragment salvaged from the ocean had not disappeared because the heat from the explosion had quickly cooled underwater, making it possible for the writing to survive.

The “No. 1” had become an issue of controversy when questions were raised as to why the writing had not been burned off during the explosion that split the vessel in half.

Despite the continuing divide over the cause of the sinking, there has been one irrefutable change: the incident created a rift in inter-Korean relations that was further exacerbated by the sudden shelling of Yeonpyeong Island a few months later.

According to information released yesterday on the South Korean government’s North Korea policy a year after the Cheonan incident, the Ministry of Unification said that it will maintain its hard-line policy against Pyongyang.

A punitive measure had been taken by Seoul last May in response to the Cheonan sinking, banning all imports of North Korean goods, as well as the sending of aid in large scales, with the exception of humanitarian aid. No new investments into the Kaesong Industrial Complex, the only joint economic effort left between the two Koreas, have been allowed.
