Curator scandal sinking already flailing Chung

The Blue House’s dilemma over Chung Un-chan’s leadership of the government’s “balanced growth” initiative - to share the wealth among fat-cat conglomerates and their small suppliers - deepened yesterday after Chung was named as a would-be paramour in the memoirs of a disgraced art curator.

Chung, a former prime minister, has already clashed with key government officials and business titans over his vision of “profit-sharing” between conglomerates and small firms. He expressed his intention to step down as chairman of the Commission on Shared Growth for Large and Small Companies, but the Blue House tried to persuade him to stay.

Chung told Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday that he had sent a long letter to President Lee Myung-bak offering to leave the commission. “I have submitted the resignation letter, so the Blue House must show a response,” Chung was quoted as saying.

Blue House spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung, however, said the presidential office wants Chung to stay. She also said Tuesday that Chung’s message to the president was not a resignation letter.

In a memoir released Tuesday, disgraced art curator Shin Jeong-ah claimed that Chung had once solicited an inappropriate relationship with her. She also claimed that Chung, then the president of Seoul National University, had offered her a job at the university museum in 2005 but said she turned it down.

Shin, a former art professor at Dongguk University, is infamous for faking a degree from Yale University to get her job and also for having an affair with former Blue House chief policy maker Byeon Yang-kyoon.

In 2007, Shin was convicted of forging her degree and embezzling money from another museum. In April 2009, after serving 18 months in prison, she was released on bail.

The tangled imbroglio has put a serious damper on some Grand National Party politicians’ plans to recruit Chung as a candidate in next month’s by-elections.

“It’s difficult for the party to talk about nominating him in the current situation,” said Representative Suh Byung-soo, a member of the GNP’s Supreme Council. Representative Chung Doo-un, another Supreme Council member, said “It’s useless to talk about an option that’s already off the table.”

Chung yesterday made an appearance at a Blue House event to promote Jeju Island. Asked by journalists to comment on Shin’s accusations, Chung shrugged the questions off and said, “I just came to attend an event.”

The Blue House yesterday remained tight-lipped about the situation. Presidential spokeswoman Kim said the Blue House’s position on the controversy surrounding Chung’s offer of resignation from the shared growth commission remains unchanged.

But sources said the Blue House’s patience with Chung is running out. Some voiced concerns that he won’t be able to lead the shared growth commission properly.

Sources at the presidential office appeared to be most concerned about Chung’s fate being endangered by a power struggle in the ruling party between his backers and his detractors.

“Shin had deep ties with the people in the administration of [former president] Roh Moo-hyun, but she only made brief mentions about them in her book while making malicious accusations against Lee administration officials,” a senior Blue House official said. “We wonder what her intentions are.”

신정아 책 ‘자극적 폭로’ 무얼 노렸나

누구는 실명, 누구는 이니셜
유명인 사생활 등 실어
“관음증 유발 책장사” 비판도

신정아(39)씨가 22일 펴낸 책 『4001』이 서점가에 바람을 일으키고 있다. 이틀 새 5만 부가 서점에 배포됐다. 초판 5만 부는 이례적이다. 일반소설도 초판 2000~3000부 정도 찍는 게 요즘 추세다. 인터넷과 트위터도 뜨겁다. 반응은 엇갈린다.

신씨는 자신에 대해 잘못 알려진 사실을 해명하려고 책을 냈다고 했다. 하지만 파문이 커지고 있다. 당장 책에서 언급된 정운찬 전 총리와 전직 일간지 기자 C씨가 반발하고 나섰다. 법적 대응도 모색 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

책에는 유명인의 사생활, 은밀한 이야기 등이 실렸다. 한국출판마케팅연구소 한기호 소장은 “개인의 신상을 까발리는 인터넷의 문제점이 지적돼왔는데 그런 부작용이 단행본에까지 번져 유감”이라며 “상대의 입장을 배제한 신씨의 일방적 주장은 또 하나의 폭력일 수밖에 없다”고 말했다. 인터넷·트위터 등에선 일반인의 관음증을 자극해 책 장사를 하려는 것이 아니냐는 비판이 제기됐다.

특히 내용의 진위와 표현 수위가 논란이 됐다. 신씨는 정 전 총리를 향해 “도덕관념 제로”라는 표현까지 썼다. 유부남인 변양균 전 청와대 정책실장과 연인관계였던 그가 도덕성을 앞세워 누구를 탓할 처지인지를 묻는 네티즌이 적지 않았다. 정 전 총리의 실명을 거론한 것과 달리, 성추행을 했다는 기자 이름을 영문 이니셜로 처리한 것에 대한 궁금증도 일었다. 실명과 이니셜을 나눈 기준이 모호하다는 것이다.

2007년 학력 위조사건 당시, 노무현 전 대통령 관련 대목도 불분명하다. 신씨는 외할머니 소개로 노 전 대통령을 만났다고 한 후 더 이상 자세한 언급을 삼갔다. 노 전 대통령을 배후로 지목해 궁금증만 유발시켰다. 또 “노 대통령으로부터 ‘어린 친구가 묘하게 사람을 끄는 데가 있다. 더 큰일을 위해 세상에 나서보지 않겠냐’고 권유를 받았다”거나 “대국민 담화나 기자회견 할 때마다 가끔씩 자신의 의견을 물었고, 홍보나 대변인을 해도 잘하겠다고 했다”는 자기 홍보성 주장도 펼쳤다. 책의 묘사를 믿기 어렵다는 반응이 노 전 대통령 측근으로부터 나왔다.

책 자체의 ‘정치성’도 도마에 올랐다. 정 전 총리는 4월 재·보선 출마가 유력한 후보 중 한 명이었다. 이에 대해 책을 펴낸 ‘사월의책’ 안희곤(47) 대표는 “제가 1980년대 초·중반 대학을 다닌 386세대라는 것을 들어 ‘정치적 의도’가 있다는 이야기가 나도는데 전혀 그렇지 않다”고 말했다. 그는 “저자가 책 내용을 직접 결정했다. C기자라는 이니셜을 사용한 것은 변호사와 상의해 처음부터 그렇게 한 것으로 안다. 정 전 총리를 거론한 것은 서울대 총장 시절 그가 신씨에게 서울대 교수직과 미술관장직을 제의한 적이 없다고 공개적으로 말했었기 때문에 이를 바로잡기 위한 것으로 알고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

문화평론가 김종휘씨는“미디어에 의해 까발려지고 도덕적으로 낙인 찍히며 유명인이 된 사람이 재기하기 위해 이런 방법(자극적인 폭로)을 쓴 것 아닌가”라며 “우리 사회에서 자극적 폭로에 대응하는 방법은 더 수위 높은 폭로밖에 없음을 보여주는 것 같아 씁쓸하다”고 말했다.
