Aviation leaders meet as Incheon Airport turns 10

Aviation leaders from around the world will gather in Incheon on Sunday for a two-day conference to develop new air routes.

This year’s Routes Asia 2011 forum will attract 70 airlines and 450 officials from 140 different airports around the world.

The event coincides with the 10th anniversary of Incheon International Airport.

“Such a turnout is the result of having high interest in Incheon International Airport by global airport officials,” said Lee Chae-wook, chief executive officer of Incheon International Airport Corp., yesterday. “By successfully organizing this year’s forum, I’ll make sure Incheon Airport will go beyond being a hub airport of Northeast Asia to become the best airport in the world.”

March 29 marks the 10th anniversary of Incheon International Airport. Currently, 65 airlines operate 620 flights connecting with 170 cities a day. It also deals with 25 percent of the country’s trade volume.

“Incheon International Airport now ranks eighth in the world for the number of passengers and second in the world in terms of trade volume,” said Lee Gwang-su, head of Incheon International Airport’s planning and coordination office. “The airport has the potential to grow 10 percent a year.”

Although Incheon International Airport has won the top service quality award by Airports Council International for six consecutive years, Incheon International Airport had a shaky beginning.

Even before it was built, critics voiced concerns about building an airport in an area prone to thick fog and typhoons.

There were also worries over the stability of the ground, as the airport is built atop reclaimed land joining Yeongjong and Yongyu islands.

But the airport turned its biggest weakness into a strength. Since it is on an island, it can operate 24 hours a day.

Most of all, it’s is simply the best airport in the world due to its service. The departure procedure, from getting a boarding pass to going through immigration, takes an average of 16 minutes, whereas, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standard is an hour.

Incheon International Airport plans to invest 4 billion won ($3.5 million) to handle 62 million passengers by 2017. “We’ll lead the global airport industry,” said CEO Lee.

인천공항공사 27~29일 아시아루트 회의 주최

인천국제공항공사는 27~29일 인천 송도 컨벤시아에서 항공노선 개발 분야의 최대 국제회의인 `아시아루트 회의`를 개최한다고 24일 밝혔다.

올해로 9회째를 맞는 아시아루트 회의는 영국 멘체스터에 있는 RDG(Route Development Group)사가 주관해 아시아 지역의 70여개 항공사와 140여개 공항 관계자 등이 참석하는 항공노선 개발 회의다.

인천공항공사가 2008년 마카오, 2009년 인도 하이데라바드, 2010년 호주 애들레이드에 이어 주최하는 올해 아시아 루트 회의는 역대 최대 규모가 될 전망이다.

제9회 아시아루트 회의는 항공사와 공항 간 1대 1 비즈니스 미팅을 비롯해 여행산업 관련 전시회, 항공 관련 포럼 및 투어 프로그램 등으로 구성됐다.

인천공항공사는 이번 회의에서 1대 1 비즈니스 미팅을 적극적으로 활용해 신규노선을 개발하고 각국 공항 및 항공사와 네트워크를 강화할 방침이다.

인천공항공사는 개항 이후 해마다 아시아루트 회의에 참가해 매년 3~5개 항공사의 신규 취항 또는 증편을 이끌어냈다. 지난해에는 회의 참가를 계기로 델타항공, 에어아시아X, 에어인디아 등이 인천공항에 신규 취항했다.

인천공항공사는 또 6년 연속 세계 최우수 공항으로 선정된 인천공항의 경쟁력을 홍보하고 다채로운 문화예술 공연 및 전통문화 체험 이벤트를 통해 참가자에게 인천공항과 한국의 매력을 알릴 계획이다.

이채욱 인천공항공사 사장은 "인천공항 개항 10주년을 기념해 열리는 이번 아시아루트 회의를 성공적으로 개최해 동북아 최고 허브공항의 입지를 굳히고 문화예술 및 최신 IT 공항의 이미지를 부각시키겠다"고 말했다.
