SNU opens country’s fifth cancer hospital

Seoul National University Hospital announced the opening Friday of a special hospital for cancer patients, giving Korea its fifth cancer hospital.

Four major hospitals in Korea - Asan Medical Center, Severance Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, and Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital - run cancer hospitals. Medical experts predicted competition in the field will intensify with the opening of Seoul National University Cancer Center Hospital this week.

The new 27,677 square meter hospital is built inside the Seoul National University Hospital in Yeongeon-dong, Jongno District. Its structure has six stories above ground and four below.

Though the size isn’t large compared to other cancer hospitals, Noh Dong-young, chief of the SNU Cancer Hospital, said patients who choose it will be able to get “one stop service for total cancer care.”

“To get treatments, patients used to have to follow a hospital’s schedule,” Noh said. “After waiting for a few days, they were able get a cancer test. But they need to make appointments to get the results of a cancer test. At the Seoul National University Cancer Center Hospital, patients will be able to get a cancer test and receive the results on the same day. Our staff will set up treatment plans tailored to a patient’s condition within 24 hours after the cancer test.”

The hospital will use state-of-the-art cancer equipment. It said it will be the first hospital in Asia to have a hybrid whole body PET-MR scanner, which is a combined Positron Emission Tomography scanner and magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

Normally, cancer patients in Korea are hospitalized for long-term treatment, but Noh said his hospital wants to change that practice.

“A patient who needs to get anti-cancer injections doesn’t need to be hospitalized,” Noh said. “He or she will return home after the injection.”
