Ditch the department stores and head for the outlets

Gang Eun-ju, a 36-year-old homemaker, remembers visiting a premium outlet for the first time three months ago, only to come away feeling disappointed.

“I see other people around me picking out useful, luxury products at these outlets, but when I went there, it wasn’t all that easy,” she said. “I didn’t want to go home empty-handed, though, so I ended up buying a lot of things on impulse.”

Local premium outlets, with over 100 shops each, have been a staple for fashion-savvy Koreans looking for bargains on luxury items. And major department stores are opening new outlets in the coming months. Shinsegae Group opened another premium outlet this month in Paju, Gyeonggi. Lotte Shopping Co. has also announced that it will open a premium outlet later this year.

Die-hard shoppers may find the outlets to be a shopper’s paradise, but for beginners like Gang, they can seem overwhelming.

For advice on navigating these new luxury brand outlets, the JoongAng Ilbo Style& team consulted a few of Shinsegae’s VIP shoppers on the opening day of the department store’s Paju Premium Outlets.

Decide if your trip is going to be a simple outing, or a serious shopping trip

Office worker Lee Jong-ho holds out a hoodie that he bought at the Paju Premium Outlets for 30 percent less than the original price.

Because premium outlets are generally out in the suburbs, many people visit these places as a casual outing with family or friends. But if your goal is to get the best bargains in a short amount of time, it is best to shop alone and focus on what you want to purchase.

Beun He-yoon, a 29-year-old homemaker, says that she often travels to premium outlets with her mother, but once inside they go their separate ways because they like different brands. The two women do shop together, however. Beun says that once she finds something she likes, she takes a photo of it on her phone and texts her mother for advice.

“In outlets, the key to shopping is time management and trying to keep up your energy,” she said.

Choosing the right time to shop is also important. On weekends, the best time to go is right after an early breakfast, as the traffic will be less congested at that time. Another good time to go would be in the late afternoon, after 4 or 5 p.m., when the afternoon crowd disappears.

Lee Jong-ho, a 30-year-old office worker, says that he goes to outlets in the late afternoons.

“It might seem like you would have less time to shop before the stores close, but because there are less people, you actually have more time to look at things,” he said.

Before you go, think about the four to five brands that suit you best

Many people tend to look for a specific item when they shop. But when planning a trip to a premium outlet, it is best to think about the four to five different brands that usually suit you best. Otherwise you may have to go to numerous shops before you find the item you are looking for.

Choi Yun-mi, 27, the owner of an online shopping mall, said that before she arrived at the Paju Premium Outlets, she thought of five shops that she would visit because in her experience, even if she shops various brands, she always ends up buying things from the same five brands.

“If the shops you want to visit are far apart, it is best to think of a route that will reduce the time it takes to walk from one shop to another,” she said. “Printing a map from the outlet’s Web site makes it easy to plan your route.”

Many of Shinsegae’s VIP shoppers also suggested going to shops that are not usually found in outlets, where shoppers can find unique pieces that are usually not on sale.

Look for classic designs that won’t go out of style

Designer Jang Min-ho, 31, says that when shopping premium outlets, he usually looks for classic items that aren’t too trendy, like shirts or suits. He added that when he buys clothes that are trendy, they often look outdated in just a few months. For this reason, he avoids buying jackets that have exaggerated collars and shirts with loud prints.

A crucial element to look for, according to the VIP shoppers, is quality fabric. In particular, they advise looking for 100 percent silk or cashmere items, even if they came out two or three seasons ago because they can usually be found at a discount of 70 percent or more.

“I think that classic items that you’ll wear all the time, even if they don’t fit perfectly, are good investments,” said Jang, adding that you can always have the clothes altered.

“If a sleeve on a coat is too long, you can shorten it with buttons. And for pants that are too long, you can fold them once or twice, which is in style anyway these days.”

Look for additional discounts

Even premium outlets have sales. During annual department store sales, outlets also hold sales with discounts of 20 to 30 percent.

However, Lee Young-hee, a 54-year-old homemaker, says she often doesn’t have to wait for the sales. She goes to outlets on the weekends because even though they are crowded, the shops often give additional discounts on weekends.

Lee also suggests venturing into shops that are really crowded, even if they don’t have a poster announcing a sales event out front because shops often have discount tables inside stacked with items.

“I once bought a luxury brand bag [from a discount table] for 90 percent off, and I regret not having bought two or three of them,” she said.

Another way to get additional discounts at outlet stores is to put your name on the brand’s client list and the shops will send text messages each time they hold a sale. In addition to the sales held by individual shops, there are often outlet-wide sales every season. For example, during the height of wedding season, from March to May, outlets often hold kitchen and home appliance sales. During graduation season, they hold clothing and accessories sales.

There is such a thing as a “safe” impulse buy

It’s often difficult to leave an outlet empty-handed. Even if you can’t find something you love, it may often feel as though you have to buy something because of the effort you have put in to get there and the time you’ve spent shopping. If you feel this way and want to splurge on an impulse buy, it’s best to purchase small accessories or cosmetics.

Hong Su-hyeon, a 28-year-old office worker, says that every time she goes to an outlet, she buys a cosmetics item. She said that because she can’t frequent an outlet as often as a nearby department store, she tends to buy cosmetics at outlets, especially those that she doesn’t want to pay full price for. She says she also shops for earrings and make-up bags in outlets as well.

“These little items from luxury brands are great as gifts and are much cheaper in outlets than anywhere else,” she said.
