Images from a portraitist’s prime

Among the black-and-white portraits now on display at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul is one of a young Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011), who became one of the most recognizable actresses in history and passed away at the age of 79 last week.

The photo is part of a retrospective of Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002), known as the “master of portrait photography,” that shows historic figures in a new light, including the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the American boxer Muhammad Ali and the French designer Christian Dior.

This is Karsh’s second large-scale retrospective in Korea and includes some pieces from the first 2009 retrospective, such as a 1956 portrait of Audrey Hepburn. It shows the extremely elegant, delicate and sensitive qualities that drew so many people to the actress.

Eighty of the 100 works in the exhibition are being shown here for the first time. Among them are portraits of the American pop artist Andy Warhol, the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall and the former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Among the photos included in the 2009 exhibit is the 1941 portrait of Winston Churchill titled “The Roaring Lion,” which made Karsh famous. Here, it is displayed with another photo of Churchill that Karsh took immediately after the first one. While “The Roaring Lion” portrait captures the prime minister in a belligerent mood after having his cigar suddenly removed from his mouth for the photo, the second image shows him smiling and apparently in a better mood. Whereas the first photo with “the Churchillian scowl” became popular when Britain was fighting Germany during World War II because of its unconquerable and resolute atmosphere, Karsh said in his autobiography that he actually preferred the second one.

It is said that the Churchill photo took only two minutes to shoot, because that was the only time he was allowed with the prime minister. But this was an exceptional case. In most cases, Karsh spent a great deal of time with his subjects, talking with them and watching their eyes, posture and movements. He also read, viewed and listened to the works of those who sat for him to gain a broader understanding of their work.

This practice produced intimate portraits of his subjects. His portrait of the surrealist painter Joan Miro shows the artist with a humorous smile that echoes the whimsical nature of Miro’s paintings. Karsh’s photo of pianist Glenn Gould shows him completely absorbed in his playing.

The exhibit does a good job of highlighting the many stories behind the photographs. One placard tells viewers that Elizabeth Taylor brought a new cat to the photo shoot and that Karsh named the cat Michael. When Elizabeth Taylor and Karsh met the next day, Taylor told him that her cat’s name was now “Michael Karsh Taylor.”

The exhibition organizers said the photos on display are prints from the original negatives owned by the Estate of Yousuf Karsh in Canada.

The only unfortunate thing about the exhibit is that the lighting is so strong that visitors are reflected in the frames, which detracts from the beauty of the images on display.

숨은 내면이 묻어나는 순간을 붙들다

　배우 오드리 헵번(사진·1929~1993)의 사진배경은 하얗다. ‘강한 아름다움보다는 우아하면서 매끄러운 아름다움’을 보여주기 위한 작가의 의도가 담겼다. 촬영 당시 카쉬는 오드리 헵번에게서 ‘상처 받기 쉬운 연약함’을 읽었다.

　스페인의 세계적인 첼로 거장 파블로 카잘스(1876~1973)는 등지고 앉은 모습이다. 어둡고 텅빈 방을 배경으로 첼로를 켜고 있는 파블로의 뒷모습에선 조국에서 추방 당한 예술가의 쓸쓸함이 묻어난다. 보스턴박물관에 전시됐을 때 한 노신사가 매일 그 사진 앞에서 오랫동안 서 있곤 했다. 이유를 묻는 큐레이터에게 노신사는 이렇게 답했다. “조용히 하시게.지금 내가 음악을 듣고 있는 게 안 보이는가!”

　20세기를 대표하는 인물사진작가 유섭 카쉬(1908~2002)의 초상 사진은 그 자체가 역사다.윈스턴 처칠·피델 카스트로·오드리 헵번·알버트 아인슈타인·파블로 피카소·어니스트 헤밍웨이·마더 테레사 등 그의 카메라 앞에 선 인물의 면면이 쟁쟁하다. 카쉬는 이들의 손짓과 몸짓, 움직임, 응시 방향의 찰나를 포착해 인물의 내면을 드러내는 데 작업의 초점을 뒀다.

　세계2차대전을 이끈 영국 윈스턴 처칠 총리의 강인함, 조지 버나드쇼의 해학과 풍자, 아인슈타인의 고뇌, 소피아 로렌의 관능미와 여유로움 등 각 인물의 매력이 한 장의 사진에 고스란히 녹아난다.

　5월 8일까지 예술의전당 한가람미술관 제5전시장에서 열리고 있는 ‘인물사진의 거장, 카쉬전’은 카쉬 탄생 100주년을 기념해 기획됐다. 1930년대부터 1990년대까지 4000여 점의 작품 중 대표작 70점이 엄선됐다. 작품은 디지털 프린팅이 아닌 카쉬가 직접 만든 오리지널빈티지 필름이다. 보스턴미술관 미술품 운송 전문가가 작품을 보호하기 위해 직접 화물칸에 타고 국내에 들여올 정도로 역사적 가치가 높은 작품이다. 사진 속 인물의 일대기와 카쉬가 직접 기록해둔 촬영 당시 에피소드가 함께 소개된다.

　어린이 관람객(6~10세)을 위한 도슨토 프로그램도 진행된다. 이야기와 책으로만 접하던 20세기 위인들을 만나는 시간이다. 작품 속 인물들이 사진을 찍게 된 배경, 사진 속 인물이생각하고 있는 것, 카쉬가 사진을 통해 살리고 싶어 한 인물의 특징 등에 대해 설명을 들으면서 작품을 감상할 수 있다. 도슨토 프로그램은 월·수·금 오후 5시, 토·일 오전 11시 30분 진행. 참가비는 1만5000원. 카쉬전 관람료는 6000~8000원. 문의 02-581-8956
