Italian-style espresso is perfect ⓐfor savoring ⓑthe taste of ⓒcoffee. It is also the base for many other kinds of coffee. ⓓAn Americano is prepared by adding hot water to espresso. Both latte and cappuccino are made with steamed milk. ⓔStarbucks was the company that in the 1980s introduced Italian-style coffee to Americans, who were accustomed to drinking drip coffee. It took its business model from Italian cafes.

Writing Tip
ⓐ to savor → for savoring
ⓑ the taste and flavor → the taste
ⓓ Americano is a style of coffee → An Americano is 부정관사 an으로 아메리카노가 커피의 한 종류임을 나타냄
ⓔ It was Starbucks that introduced in the 1980s the Italian style coffee to Americans → Starbucks was the company that in the 1980s introduced Italian-style coffee to Americans

In Korea, ⓐthe tastes of consumers are diverse. Some people still get coffee from ⓑthe vending machine, some others drink instant coffee, and others prefer to drink brewed coffee. ⓒMoreover, “a coffee war” is ⓓstaged in the market among domestic as well as foreign brand coffee. When competition gets hot, the price of commodities goes down, according to the market theory. However, it goes to the contrary in reality. In Europe, it costs 1 euro for an espresso at a take-out. In the United States, too, coffee is not as expensive as it is in Korea. It should be verified whether a sales gimmick has made the price of coffee skyrocket by creating tasteless bubble on it.

In Korea, ⓐconsumers’ tastes are diverse. Some still get coffee from ⓑvending machines while others prefer to drink brewed coffee. ⓒBut a weird coffee war is ⓓbeing waged here between local and foreign brands. When the competition between the brands heats up, prices should go down, according to the rules of economics. But it’s the opposite in Korea. Coffee is not nearly as expensive in Western countries as it is here. In Europe, it costs 1 euro ($1.38) for an espresso at a take-out coffee shop. In the United States, too, coffee is not as expensive as it is here. We should investigate whether the high price of coffee is legitimate or whether it’s nothing more than a tasteless sales gimmick.

Writing Tip
ⓐ the tastes of consumers → consumers’ tastes 사람의 소유격은 of를 쓰기보다는 ‘s를 사용
ⓑ the vending machine → vending machines
