Foreign minister Kim on his first trip to Beijing

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan flew from Seoul to Beijing yesterday to launch his first visit to China since taking office last October, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade yesterday.

Kim is scheduled to meet Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi as well as other Chinese officials to discuss issues of mutual interest.

Among the issues discussed, the ministry said, will be North Korea’s nuclear program and other geopolitical variables on the Korean Peninsula as well as cooperation between South Korea and China on economic and diplomatic fronts. South Korea and China will mark the 20th anniversary of the signing of diplomatic ties next year.

Kim’s visit “is expected to contribute to making the strategic cooperation relation between the two countries more substantial,” the ministry said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang visited Seoul last month.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry also said yesterday that Kim will travel to Africa later this week for a three-nation tour aimed at boosting partnerships in energy, infrastructure and other areas. The eight-day trip that starts Saturday will take Kim to Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia, the ministry said in a statement.

김성환 외교통상부 장관이 28일 오후 2박3일 일정으로 중국을 방문하기 위해 인천공항을 통해 출국했다.
김 장관은 29일 중국의 양제츠(楊潔지 <兼대신虎들어간簾> ) 외교부장과 회담하고 원자바오(溫家寶) 총리를 예방한 뒤 왕자루이(王家瑞) 공산당 대외연락부장과 만찬을 함께 할 예정이다.

김 장관이 지난해 10월 취임한 뒤 중국을 공식 방문하기는 처음으로 지난달 양제츠 외교부장의 방한에 대한 답방의 의미가 있다.

김 장관은 한.중 외교장관 회담에서 내년 수교 20주년을 앞두고 양국관계 발전 방안, 경제ㆍ통상 분야 협력 강화, 북핵 문제를 포함한 한반도 정세 등에 관해 의견을 교환할 계획이다.

특히 김 장관은 북한 우라늄농축 프로그램(UEP)에 대한 유엔 안전보장이사회 논의 등 국제사회 대응과 6자회담 재개 방안을 협의할 것으로 알려졌다.

김 장관을 수행하는 위성락 한반도평화교섭본부장은 30일 오전 우다웨이(武大偉) 한반도사무 특별대표와 6자회담 수석대표 회담을 한 뒤 오찬을 함께 할 예정이다.

조병제 외교부 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 "양국 6자회담 수석대표 간 접촉에서 UEP 문제를 안보리에서 어떻게 논의해나갈 것이냐에 대한 포괄적인 논의가 있을 것"이라고 말했다.
