Students rallying over human rights in North

South Korean university students are becoming more involved in fighting for human rights in North Korea, forming a community of students with the goal of tackling the issue.

Myeong Hwa-yeon, 23, a senior at Seoul National University, said she plans to create a student society aimed at studying human rights issues in North Korea.

“I have met with some North Korean defectors in the church that I attend and realized that I have been too ignorant of human rights in the North,” Myeong said.

“I think North Korea abuses its people the most in the world.”

Myeong has been connecting with students at other universities in Seoul, such as Ewha Womans University, ChungAng University and Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary.

Banding together with these students, Myeong said they will send letters to lawmakers to urge them to pass the North Korean Human Rights Act during an extra parliamentary session in April .

They also will hold a photography exhibit in May to shed light on abused North Korean people.

Ji Sin-jeong, 20, a junior at Ewha Womans University, also plans to form a club about human rights in the North.

“When I took a class about feminism, the issue on human rights intrigued me. So, naturally, I became interested in North Koreans as well, who are dying of hunger and discriminated against in their society,” Jin said.

Yu So-hui, 22, a senior at Sookmyung Women’s University, is leading a society called “H.A.N.A.” that studies about North Korean human rights. “We have now 16 members in the society and more and more freshmen are joining us every year. We would exchange ideas and work with societies in other universities, if more university clubs are formed for North Korean human rights,” Yu said.

Jeong Jun-ho, 22, a junior at Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary, also plans to form a club. “We have to try to differentiate two things, the North Korean regime and its people, and university students should take the lead in fighting human rights abuse in the North,” Jeong said.
