Jazz artist comes back from the brink

In 2003, jazz musician Jeong Won-yeong, 51, had a successful career as a songwriter, teacher and recording artist and had just released his fourth album, “Are You Happy.” But he had to put all of that on hold when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor that almost left him without his hearing, not to mention his life.

Eight years later, however, he is cancer free and back to work. He now has his own cable music show and a new album that has been well received since its release late last year.

Jeong released his first album, “Days That Passed By,” in 1993 after graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He went on to release three other albums to popular and critical acclaim before he received the diagnosis that almost cost him his hearing. Fortunately, he had surgery to remove the tumor and since then, his hearing has been fine.

After the tumor was removed, he returned to the piano, his first love.

“I wrote several pieces for other bands and then I started mapping out a piano album for myself,” Jeong said in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo. “I wanted to make music that was easy to listen to.”

Most of the tunes on his fifth album, released last December, begin and end with a piano solo. But the album goes beyond piano melodies. Many of the songs also feature Jeong’s warm vocals. For example, “Winter” starts off with a piano solo and continues with the strains of an acoustic guitar until we finally hear Jeong’s low voice.

“This album is centered around the piano, but it is not genre specific,” Jeong said. “Whether it is calm piano music or something closer to rock, I hope listeners will find warmth in my music.”

The album owes its existence in part to his new music show, M Sound Flex, which airs on cable channel Mnet every Saturday at midnight.

The show helped revive interest in Jeong’s music and boosted album sales.

Through the show, Jeong provides viewers with an introduction to three or four guest bands that also perform live on the show.

“Many television stations have music programs but they are more like talk shows. I will never let this show become like that,” he said. “I want this show to focus on the sound, so the musicians can express their music freely.”

In addition to recording, writing and hosting, Jeong has spent the last few years as a music professor in the broadcasting and entertainment department at Howon University.

One of Jeong’s most successful students is Jang Jae-in, who was one of the top three finalists on the second season of “Superstar K.”

After her appearance on the popular reality television, Jang was asked to contribute a song to the soundtrack of popular television drama “Athena,” which aired last year.

While at Howon, Jeong also launched Korea’s first department devoted to nurturing young singer-songwriters.

Jeong is hoping to find multitalented performers like Jang, who was among the first group of students Jeong taught as part of the program.

“While I’m with the school, I want to devote myself to searching for young musicians with self-confidence,” Jeong said.

He said he also has plans to create more opportunities for talented but lesser known musicians.

At the end of the interview, Jeong brought out a worn notebook filled with half-written melodies.

“Whenever a melody pops up in my mind, I write it down here,” Jeong said. “Eventually I shape these ideas into songs.”

노래·방송 등 영역을 넓혀가고 있는 정원영은 “아이돌과 개성파 뮤지션의 균형이 필요하다”고 했다.

뮤지션 정원영(51)의 이름은 명사(名詞) ‘음악’의 동의어 같다. 그의 이름에는 ‘음악’이란 말이 취할 수 있는 숱한 서술어가 무리 없이 어울린다. 이를테면 우리는 음악을 연주하거나 듣거나 만들거나 가르친다 따위의 말을 흔히 쓰는데, 그는 이 모든 술어를 매일 되풀이하며 살고 있다.

　미국 버클리 음대를 졸업한 뒤 ‘가버린 날들(1993)’로 데뷔한 그는 십수 년을 가수이자 작곡가이자 피아니스트이자 밴드 리더로 살았다. 몇 년 전부터는 음악교수(호원대 실용음악학부)로도 재직 중이다.

　최근 그의 이름에는 또 다른 술어, ‘진행하다’가 덧붙었다. 케이블채널 엠넷의 새 음악 프로그램 ‘엠 사운드플렉스(매주 토요일 밤 12시 방송)’ MC을 맡으면서다. 이 프로그램은 매주 서너 팀의 게스트가 밴드 연주에 맞춰 라이브 음악을 선보이는 방송이다.

　“음악 프로그램이란 타이틀을 달고 버라이어티 토크 쇼를 흉내 내는 경우가 많은데, 절대 그렇게 만들진 않을 겁니다. 뮤지션들이 마음껏 표현할 수 있도록 사운드에 집중할 거에요.”

　10여 년 만에 방송 MC를 맡으면서 정원영의 음악도 슬슬 다시 깨어나는 중이다. 지난해 말 솔로 5집 앨범을 냈는데, 그 음악의 잔향이 겨우내 이어졌다. 이번 앨범은 2003년 4집 ‘아 유 해피(Are You Happy)’를 발표한 지 7년 만이다. 그 7년 새 그에겐 제법 아찔한 굴곡이 있었다. 뇌에 기생하던 종양 때문에 청력을 잃을 뻔했다. 다행히 종양은 그의 청력을 건드리지 않은 채 제거됐다. 종양 수술 뒤 밴드 음악으로 돌아왔던 그는 7년 만의 솔로 앨범에선 전공인 피아노를 다시 끌어안았다.

　“밴드용 음악을 몇 차례 내보낸 다음 피아노만을 위한 앨범을 구상하기 시작했어요. 차분히 들을 수 있는 피아노 음반을 만들고자 애썼습니다.”

　그의 5집은 대다수 곡이 피아노 독주로 문을 열고 닫는다. 그렇다고 피아노 연주곡으로만 채우진 않았다. 정원영 특유의 아릿한 음색을 들을 수 있는 노래도 여럿이다. 특히 타이틀곡 ‘겨울’은 피아노가 흘러간 길을 어쿠스틱 기타가 가만히 뒤따르고, 정원영의 나지막한 목소리가 발을 맞추는 인상적인 노래다.

　“피아노가 중심이 됐지만 5집을 어떤 장르라고 말해야 할지는 모르겠어요. 잔잔한 피아노 음악이든 과격한 밴드 음악이든 ‘정원영 음악’에서 따뜻한 아름다움을 발견해주면 좋겠습니다.”

　그는 2006년부터 대학에서 실용음악을 가르치고 있다. ‘슈퍼스타K 2’에서 가수로 데뷔한 장재인이 그의 제자다. “보컬도 연주도 어정쩡하지만 음악 하지 않으면 안 될 인재를 찾기 위해” 국내 최초로 싱어 송 라이터 전공을 만들었는데, 그 첫 번째 입학생 가운데 장재인이 있었다. 그는 “학교에 있는 동안 자기 확신이 탄탄한 젊은 뮤지션을 발굴하기 위해 애쓸 생각”이라고 했다. 진행 중인 음악 프로그램에서도 “알려지지 않은 실력파 뮤지션을 위한 무대를 자주 마련하겠다”고 밝혔다.

　인터뷰 말미 그는 낡은 노트 몇 권을 슬쩍 보여줬다. 10년은 족히 넘어 보이는 노트에는 이런저런 악보가 흘겨 그려져 있었다. “갑자기 떠오르는 멜로디를 잡아채 이 노트에 옮겨두면 그게 다듬어져 음악으로 나온다”고 했다. 이 노트를 끌어안은 채 음악을 연주하고 듣고 만들고 가르치는 것. 그게 그의 삶이다.

　그래서 하는 말이다. 정원영의 이름은 명사 ‘음악’을 닮았다. 정원영은 음악이다.
