Military plans firing drill off Yeonpyeong Island

The military could hold a firing drill on Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong islands as early as today, said a military official who asked to remain anonymous.

Yeonpyeong Island was the site of a fatal shelling by North Korea last November, which resulted in the deaths of two civilians and two marines.

“Following our annual plans for firing drills, we are expecting to hold our first firing drill of the year,” said the source, who added that the schedule was subject to change based on weather conditions but that the drill would likely be held by week’s end.

Preparatory measures had not yet been taken, as is normally expected with drills of a similar nature. As of yesterday afternoon, the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration had not issued a detour notice for ships near the western border islands.

“The military is planning to hold the drill in a quiet manner to prevent protests from North Korea and another attack on Yeonpyeong Island,” the official said.

Pyongyang has said last year’s shelling of Yeonpyeong Island was provoked by South Korean forces executing a firing drill near the maritime border between the two Koreas.

The South Korean military is taking precautions against any surprise situations that may occur around the time of the drill, the source said. “We may alert ships in nearby waters to evacuate two hours prior to the drill and we are prepared for unexpected situations,” said the official, who added that K9 howitzers and 155-millimeter cannons would be deployed during the drill.

북한이 지난해 11월 23일 연평도 포 공격의 빌미로 삼았던 우리 군의 연평도 해상 사격훈련이 이르면 이번 주 실시된다. 군 관계자는 29일 “백령도·연평도에서의 연례 사격훈련을 개시키로 했다”며 “기상 상황에 따라 일정이 조정될 수 있겠지만 이르면 금주 중에도 훈련을 실시할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다. 이 관계자는 “이번 사격훈련에 K-9 자주포와 105㎜ 견인포, 벌컨포 등을 동원할 계획”이라며 “훈련 규모는 지난해 12월 보다 축소될 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

　군은 지난해 북한의 연평도 공격 한 달여 만인 12월 20일 K-9자주포를 비롯해 1600여 발의 실탄사격 훈련을 실시했다. 이 훈련 직전 북한은 남북장성급회담 북측 단장 명의의 통지문에서 “우리 공화국 영해를 고수하기 위해 2, 3차의 예상할 수 없는 자위적 타격이 가해질 것”이라고 위협해 긴장이 고조됐다. 그러나 북한은 훈련 당일 “비열한 군사적 도발에 일일이 대응하지 않겠다”는 논평을 냈다. 하지만 북한은 최근 대북 전단살포 지역에 대해 조준 타격을 하겠다고 밝히고 있어 대응이 주목된다. 특히 최근 북한군 고위 관계자가 고급 승용차를 타고 전방지역을 시찰한 것이 우리 군에 포착돼 군은 경계태세를 강화하고 있다. 군 관계자는 북한 군 동향에 대해 “육상 정찰과 해안포 포문 개폐 작업 등 일상적인 활동 외에 특이사항은 보이지 않고 있다”고 말했다.

　우리 군은 사격훈련 때 국립해양조사원을 통해 항행경보를 발령해 사격 구역에 대한 선박의 진입을 막지만 29일 현재 항행경보를 내리지 않았다. 군 관계자는 “항행경보를 미리 통보하는 것이 통상적인 절차이긴 하지만 최근 긴장된 남북관계와 북한의 대응을 고려해 아직까지 항행경보를 통보하지는 않았다”며 “사격 시작 2시간 전에 해당 지역의 선박을 대피시킨 후 훈련이 가능하다”고 설명했다.
