Koo Ja-cheol still adapting to football and life in Germany

And for the former Jeju United midfielder, living in a foreign country for the first time hasn’t been easy.
But Koo is trying. Trying to adjust to a country that is very unfamiliar. He said he has at least learned the way Germans play.
“I now understand the German style of football,” Koo said in a phone interview with Ilgan Sports.
Koo, who led the January Asian Cup in scoring, failed to make much of an impact for Wolfsburg early on and saw his team fall to the relegation zone earlier this month.
But the skies do look brighter for his team following a coaching change that involves a familiar face for Wolfsburg fans - former coach Felix Magath.
After firing Steve McClaren, who once managed the English national team, the Bundesliga club decided to go with the German coach who only two years ago led Wolfsburg to a Bundesliga title.
Now Koo, and the rest of the team, can focus more on football and less on off-field drama.
“Magath is a hero for this club,” Koo said. “Our team spirit has changed since he came to the club and nobody worries about relegation, including me.”
Koo is also likely to benefit from the coaching change. A local newspaper in Wolfsburg reported on Wednesday that Magath is expected to change the midfield, with the paper going so far as to speculate that Koo would start games as a left midfielder.
Koo appeared in six games before Magath took over on March 17, playing mostly as a substitute in the second half. But last week against VfB Stuttgart, Koo played 30 minutes, the most he’s played in a Bundesliga game thus far.
Meanwhile, Koo is trying to adapt to life in Germany and is looking for ways to enjoy his free time.
“Sometimes, I really miss my life in Korea,” Koo said, adding that some things that seem like simple tasks in Korea are actually complicated in Germany.
For example, Koo said he requested Internet service when he arrived two months ago but still hasn’t received it.
“Some people say you have to wait three or four months [for internet],” Koo said. “It is a different environment than Korea.”
Koo was also disappointed he could not watch Korea’s play against Honduras last Friday.
He said he was able to find out who won after talking on the phone with friend and fellow national-team member Ki Sung-Yueng.
“I really want to see games in Korea.” Koo said. “Since TV stations here don’t broadcast Korea games, I have to watch over the Internet, but I can’t use the Internet right now.”
Nobody said it would be easy.

-요즘 일상 생활의 최대 관심사는
"인터넷이다. 이곳 볼프스부르크로 건너오자마자 인터넷을 신청했는데, 두 달이 지난 지금까지 묵묵부답이다. 주변에 물어보니 최소 서너 달은 기다려야 한다더라. 한국과는 인터넷 환경이 많이 다른 것 같다."
-최근 열린 온두라스와의 A매치 평가전은 봤나
"당연히 못 봤다. 이곳 TV에서는 중계를 해주지 않아 인터넷으로 경기 동영상을 다운받아야하는데 말했다시피 인터넷이 되질 않으니…. (기)성용(22·셀틱)이와 통화하며 4-0으로 이겼다는 소식만 접했다."
-궁금한 것 많은 스물 두 살 청년이 인터넷을 쓰지 못한다는 건 정말 힘든 일인데
"온두라스전을 포함해서 한국에서 열리는 경기를 너무나 보고 싶다. (이)청용이도 영국에 처음 건너간 후에 인터넷을 설치하는데 꼬박 3개월이 걸렸다고 한다. 솔직히 힘들다. 하지만 방법이 없지 않나. 참고 기다려보는 수 밖에."
-여가시간에는 주로 뭘 하나
"얼마 전 한 팬이 '무한도전'과 '1박2일'을 다운받은 뒤 외장 하드에 넣어 보내줬다. 시간이 생길 때마다 그 프로그램들을 껴안고 살았다. 그동안 정말 잘 봤다. 근데 이젠 거의 다 봤다. 앞으로가 문제다. 막막하다(웃음)"
-감독이 바뀌었다. 팀 분위기에 변화가 있나(볼프스부르크는 올 시즌 성적 부진의 책임을 지고 스티브 맥클라렌 전 감독을 해임했다. 피에르 리트바르스키 감독 대행 체제로 잠시 전환했다가 최근 펠릭스 마가트 감독에게 지휘봉을 맡긴 상태다. 편집자주)
"훈련량이 다소 늘어난 것을 제외하고는 특별히 달라진 점은 없는 것 같다."
-볼프스부르크가 현재 강등권(17위)에 떨어져 있는데, 팀 분위기는 어떤가
"마가트 감독님은 볼프스부르크의 영웅이다. 모두가 강등권에서 탈출시켜줄 것으로 믿는 분위기다. 팀 분위기 또한 새 감독님 부임 이후 한결 좋아졌다. 아무도 강등에 대한 걱정을 하지 않는다. 나도 마찬가지다."
