German college opens in free economic zone

The first research-centered foreign college in one of Korea’s free economic zones held an opening ceremony at its Busan campus on Wednesday, according to the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone yesterday.

Representatives of Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and dignitaries from the economic zone attended the event held at the university’s Busan Techno Park campus, officials said.

About 80 people attended the event, including Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik and Thomas Schock, FAU chairman.

The Busan campus is FAU’s first outside Germany, economic zone officials said.

They said it is also the second foreign college built among the six free-economic zones in Korea after the Netherlands’ Shipping and Transport College opened a campus in the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone in South Jeolla in 2008.

FAU, founded in 1743, is a leading German research and teaching university, the school said.

FAU said it is cooperating extensively with companies like Siemens and Bayer and is gaining an international reputation in biochemical engineering.

Seventeen students - 12 German and five Koreans - are enrolled for the spring semester, the college said. All students are in master’s programs in chemical and bioengineering and are being taught by eight German professors, FAU said.

The semester in Busan began on March 2.

독일 명문 프리드리히 알렉산더 에어랑엔 뉴른베르크 대학교(FAU) 부산캠퍼스가 국내 진출후 첫 개교 기념식을 갖는다.

부산시와 부산진해경제자유구역청에 따르면 30일 오전 10시 강서구 지사동 부산테크노파크에서 FAU 부산캠퍼스 개교 기념식을 개최한다고 29일 밝혔다.

이날 기념식에는 FAU 본교 토마스 쇽 이사장과 부산캠퍼스 북흐홀츠 총장, 허남식 부산시장, 교육과학기술부 외국교육기관설립심사위원장, 지식경제부 경제자유구역기획단장, 국내 진출 독일회사 CEO, 독일 교수 및 유학생 등 80여 명이 참석할 예정이다.

석사과정(2년제)인 FAU 부산캠퍼스는 지난해 10월부터 대학원생 모집에 나서, 영어수업이 가능한 우수한 한국학생 5명과 독일학생 12명 등 17명을 최종 선발해 지난 2일부터 수업과 연구에 들어갔다.

FAU 부산캠퍼스는 세계 최고의 실험실습 장비를 독일에서 직접 공수해 구축 완료하고, 화학·생명공학 등 8개 전공의 대학원과 연구소를 운영할 예정이다.

1743년 개교한 독일 FAU는 5개 단과대학에 학생 수 2만7천300명 규모로 2006년 300여 개 독일대학 평가에서 7위를 차지했으며, 노벨상 수상자 3명을 배출한 세계적인 명문대학이다.

특히 FAU 화학생명공학연구소는 2005년도 독일 내 국책연구비 수주 1위 연구기관으로 지멘스, 바이엘 등 유럽의 주요기업과 연구 프로젝트를 수행하는 등 화학·생명공학 분야 세계 최고 수준을 자랑하고 있다.
