Azaranka defeats Sharapova for Miami title

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Shrieking with every shot, Victoria Azarenka won the Sony Ericsson Open for the second time by beating Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in Saturday’s final.

The eighth-seeded Azarenka was the steadier player and swept nine consecutive games to take charge. Sharapova committed 43 unforced errors, held serve only once and came up short with a late comeback bid.

“I played real well the first set,’’ Azarenka said. “Maria is such a great fighter; I knew she was going to fight to the end. She came up with great tennis at the end, and I had to hang in there. That’s what paid off.’’

Azarenka also won at Key Biscayne in 2009, stopping Serena Williams in the final. The two titles are the biggest of the Belarussian’s career.

Sharapova, whose most recent title was at Strasbourg in May 2010, has lost her past four finals. She fell to 0-3 in finals at Key Biscayne, where she was also the runner-up in 2005 and 2006. The women’s final matched two of the most notorious grunters in tennis. Beforehand, Azarenka suggested fans wear earplugs, and the two players traded shrieks on every rally, drawing giggles from the crowd at one point.

However, Azarenka was sharp, while Sharapova was flat. Sharapova broke serve to reach 1-all, but it was an hour before she won another game to make it 4-1 in the second set.

“It’s a little bit too late to pick up the pace when you’re down a set and 4-love,’’ Sharapova said. “I wish I picked it up earlier, obviously. She did many things better than I did today.’’

Sharapova, who announced she’ll skip next week’s Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina, failed to convert 11 game points on her serve before holding for the only time to trail 4-2, then began to steady her strokes. Pounding winners, she overcame two match points to break for 5-4.

“I didn’t feel like I was doing anything wrong,’’ Azarenka said. “She was just playing really good, so I just had to hang in there.’’

But Sharapova was too erratic to sustain her rallies. When she dumped a forehand into the net on the final point, Azarenka dropped her racket in disbelief and celebrated by spinning and dancing across the court.

Azarenka is projected to be ranked No. 6 next week, matching a career-best.

신세대 미녀 아자렌카, 샤라포바 누르고 우승

빅토리아 아자렌카(22·세계랭킹 8위)가 3일(한국시간) 미국 마이애미에서 벌어진 여자프로테니스(WTA) 소니 에릭손 오픈 여자 단식 결승에서 마리아 샤라포바(24·세계량킹 13위)를 2-0(6-1 6-4)로 누르고 정상에 올랐다. 2009년에 이은 아자렌카의 대회 두 번째 우승이었다.

아자렌카는 이날 초반부터 샤라포바를 밀어붙여 9게임을 연속해서 쓸어담는 등 1시간46분 만에 경기를 매조졌다. 아자렌카의 투지 넘치는 공격에 이렇다할 해법을 찾지 못한 샤라포바는 43개의 범실을 저지르며 무너졌다.

아자렌카와 샤라포바는 여자 테니스를 대표하는 미녀 스타다. 샤라포바는 17살이던 2004년, 윔블던에서 우승한 대형 선수다. 그동안 안나 쿠르니코바·마리아 키릴렌코·다니엘라 한투코바 등 예쁜 선수는 차고 넘쳤다. 하지만 실력을 겸비한 선수는 드물었다. 샤라포바는 1m88㎝의 큰 키에 우아한 외모를 지닌데다 기량과 투지가 좋아 큰 사랑을 받았다. 2005년 세계랭킹 1위까지 오른 그는 메이저대회 3회 우승을 포함해 총 22개의 WTA 단식 타이틀을 갖고 있다. 하지만 그도 부상을 피해갈 순 없었다. 2008년 어깨 수술 뒤 1년 가까이 쉬었고, 복귀 이후에도 팔꿈치를 다쳐 예전의 기량을 회복하지 못 했다.

샤라포바가 주춤하는 사이 발돋움한 선수가 아자렌카다. 1m80㎝의 금발 아자렌카는 2009년 랭킹을 6위까지 끌어올리며 새로운 미녀스타로 자리매김했다. 메이저대회 타이틀은 아직 없지만 WTA 단식에서 6차례 우승하며 실력과 외모를 두루 갖춘 선수로 평가받았다. 쉽게 흥분해 경기를 종종 망치곤 했던 그는 올해 들어 차분하게 경기를 이끌며 한 단계 성숙했음을 알렸다.

아자렌카와 샤라포바는 미모와 실력 외에 괴성을 지른다는 공통점이 있다. 공을 칠 때마다 코트를 울릴 정도로 기합을 불어넣어 ‘시끄럽다’는 비판을 받았다. 이날 두 선수의 고함으로 경기장이 들썩거렸다. 아자렌카는 “오늘은 내가 좀 더 조용했다”며 웃었다.

아자렌카는 결승전 승리로 샤라포바와 상대 전적에서 3승2패로 한 발 앞서갔다. 이 대회 우승으로 랭킹도 개인 최고인 6위로 뛰어오르게 됐다. 그는 “멘털을 살짝 바꿨다. 이젠 경기를 즐기고 있다”며 “사람들은 내가 흥분하는 걸 좋아하지만 더이상 지더라도 화내는 일은 없을 것이다. 난 내가 원하는 모든 것을 갖고 있다”고 말했다.
