Author’s tale of motherhood has universal appeal
The book sold more than a million copies in Korea before becoming the author’s first book to be translated into English. It goes on sale today at bookstores in the United States, but the first printing has already sold out and the second is in the works.
“I was surprised to see that the book has been given a second print run when it isn’t even officially out yet,” Shin said. “I guess American readers connected to the classic Korean mother in the story. And maybe it’s because the presence of the mother figure can be felt by anyone, anywhere, at any time.”
“Please Look After Mom” delivers a universal message about mothers and motherhood through the story of a mother and her family.
The books opens with the elderly Mom going missing after coming to Seoul to visit her four children on her birthday, prompting the whole family to search for her. As they carry out the search, each member of the family comes to realize just how much they have neglected her and how much they stand to lose if she can’t be found.
The novel is told in four sections, narrated by a daughter, a son, the husband and mother.
Early reviews of the book have been positive. The New York Times’ Janet Maslin wrote that Shin “has turned the book’s title, which initially sounded like an order, into something much more powerful: a prayer” and notes that “part of this book’s popularity in Korea stemmed from its cautionary powers.” Another Times reviewer, Mythili G. Rao, echoed that last thought, writing that the book “isn’t as interested in emotional manipulation as it is in the invisible chasms that open up between people who know one another best.”
Shin is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York with her husband, literary critic Nam Jin-woo. In a recent interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, she talked about the book’s success and its widespread appeal.
Q. Translation is always difficult when foreign literature enters the Western market. Are you satisfied with the translation of the book?
A. I am. Some of my students at Columbia University have read the book and told me that they didn’t find any problems with the translation. One difference, however, is that I used a lot of ellipses in the original text and many of them have them disappeared in the English translation.

Moms are the same all over the world. They are the ones who will take care of you even when everyone else has abandoned you.
I reconnected with my own mother while I was writing this book. I thought that I was really close to my mom and that I knew her well. But at the same time, I realized I had neglected her as well. In that sense, Park So-nyo is likely to remind all readers of their own mothers.
At the end of the book, the daughter travels to Italy and sees the Pieta [a statue of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus after his crucifixion]. Why did you include this episode in the book?
After I finished writing the novel, I traveled to Italy by chance and happened to see the Pieta by Michelangelo. My body froze and I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. Just like the character in the novel, I, too, wondered if this was the real purpose of my trip. I put the episode in the book because I thought that the Pieta’s message suited my novel.
Will the early success of “Please Look After Mom” raise awareness of Korean writers among American readers?
I think of this novel as a first snow. Snow doesn’t pile up right away. But if it continues to fall, the whole area becomes covered in snow. Knowledge of Korean literature and Korea in general has improved since I’ve come to New York. There is an increasing number of excellent translators as well.
Are you planning to publish other works?
I just sent sample translations of “From Somewhere Afar the Phone Keeps Ringing for Me” to American and British publishers and am in discussions with one of the British publishers interested in the book.
What is your mother like?
I often thought that my mom would be the one to become a writer, but she is still a farmer. Her stories, whatever they are about, whether it is about a person, animal or plants, are always rich in imagery. So when I have trouble writing, I’ve gotten into the habit of calling my mom.
Do you have any plans for a book tour to promote your book?
The translated books are released in April and May in the United States, Canada, Britain and eight countries in Europe. I’m touring seven cities, including Seattle, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, in April and eight European countries beginning May 17.

“엄마라는 말에 국경은 없다.”
소설가 신경숙(48)씨의 베스트셀러 『엄마를 부탁해』가 미국 시장에서도 성공 스토리를 이어갈 모양새다. 딱딱한 느낌의 ‘Mother(어머니)’가 아닌, 둥글둥글한 느낌의 단어 ‘Mom(엄마)’이 들어간 『Please look after mom』이라는 제목을 달고서다. 외국 문학작품으로는 이례적으로 초판 10만부를 찍었고, 이게 다 소진돼 재판 인쇄에 들어갔다. 공식 판매 시작은 5일(현지시간)이지만 미국 서점들의 사전 주문이 그만큼 몰린다는 얘기다. 뉴욕타임스 등의 서평도 칭찬 일색이다.
30일 오후 뉴욕 맨해튼의 링컨센터 부근 카페에서 신씨를 만났다. 그는 “『엄마를 부탁해』 영문판이 미국에서 발매도 되기 전에 2판 인쇄에 들어갈 정도로 호응이 좋아 솔직히 놀랐다”며 상기된 표정이었다. “지극히 한국적인 어머니인 소설 속 ‘박소녀’에 대해 미국 독자도 전혀 이질감을 느끼지 않는 것 같다”며 “세계 어느 나라 어느 시대에서건 엄마에게서 느끼는 근본적인 존재감은 다를 바가 없다는 점을 확인했다”고 말했다.
신씨는 지난해 9월부터 문학평론가인 남편 남진우씨와 함께 뉴욕 컬럼비아대에 방문연구원으로 체류 중이다. 한국 언론과 뉴욕에서의 인터뷰는 처음이다.
-소설 속 엄마는 아들에게 줄 반찬을 한 짐 싸 들고 서울행 기차를 타곤 한다. 한국적 어머니상(像)에 미국 서점계가 열광하는 이유는 뭘까.
“겉모습만 다를 뿐 세상의 모든 엄마는 비슷한 거 아닌가. 세상 끝에 서더라도 마지막까지 나를 보듬어줄 존재, 그게 엄마다. 내 소설 속에서 너무나 친하고 그래서 다 안다고 생각했던, 그러면서도 가장 소홀하게 대하게 되는 엄마를 보는 것 같다. 소설 속 박소녀가 미국인들에게도 각자의 엄마를 떠올리게 하는 것 같다.”
-소설 마지막에 소설가 딸이 이탈리아로 여행 갔다가 피에타상을 맞닥뜨린다. 이런 이국적 에피소드도 미국 독자에게 공감을 자아낼 것 같다.
“집필을 마치고 우연히 이탈리아 여행을 갔다가 미켈란젤로의 피에타상을 마주쳤다. 보는 순간 눈을 뗄 수 없었다. 몸이 얼어붙는 것 같았다. 소설에 쓴 것처럼 ‘내가 이걸 보려고 여기에 왔나’하는 생각이 퍼뜩 들었다. 피에타상이 던지는 메시지가 내 소설에 맞는다고 생각해 집어넣었다.”
-한국문학이 해외에 진출할 때 늘 번역이 문제였다. 『Please look after mom』의 번역은 마음에 드나.
“만족스럽다. 한국어판을 거의 그대로 옮겼다. 컬럼비아대 학생들에게 읽혀보니 번역서 느낌이 나지 않는다는 반응이었다. 다만 한국어판에선 말 줄임표를 즐겨 썼는데 영문판에선 많이 사라졌더라.”
-『Please look after mom』의 초반 성공으로 한국 작가에 대한 인식이 좋아질 것 같은데.
“이번 소설은 일종의 첫눈이라고 생각한다. 첫눈은 잘 쌓이지 않는다. 하지만 계속해서 내리다 보면 언젠가 천지가 눈으로 덮일 것이다. 이번 미국 체류 기간 동안 한국문학은 물론 한국의 이미지 자체가 크게 좋아지고 있다는 느낌을 받았다. 훌륭한 번역가도 많아졌다.”
-다른 소설 출간 계획도 있나.
“장편 『어디선가 나를 찾는 전화벨이 울리고』의 샘플 번역을 미국·영국 출판사에 보냈다. 영국의 한 출판사에서 관심을 보여 판권계약을 협의 중이다.”
-실제 어머니는 어떤 분인가.
“작가가 될 사람은 우리 엄마였다는 생각이 들 때가 많다. 엄마는 아직도 농사를 짓는다. 사람이든 동물이든 식물이든 엄마가 전해주는 이야기 속에서는 늘 풍요로운 느낌이 든다. 그래서 글이 잘 안 써질 때면 엄마에게 전화를 하는 버릇이 생겼다.”
-미국 생활은 어떤가.
“미국에 살기는 처음이다. 초반엔 늘 두리번거렸는데 이젠 이곳의 일부가 된 느낌이다. 한동안 브로드웨이 뮤지컬을 즐겨 봤다. 요즘은 링컨센터에서 공연을 자주 감상한다. 한가지 아쉬운 건 엄마가 담가서 주던 김치가 없다는 거다. 아직도 엄마가 필요한 걸 보면 덜 자란 모양이다.”
-소설을 홍보하는 북 투어 계획은.
“4~5월 미국·캐나다·영국과 유럽 8개국에서 번역본이 나온다. 4월에 시애틀·필라델피아·피츠버그 등 미국 7개 도시를 돌고 5월 17일부터 유럽 8개국에 간다.”
