China holds co-director of Gwangju Biennale

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation of Korea yesterday expressed regret over the Chinese police’s detention of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and urged Beijing to make public the current situation of Ai, who is co-director of Gwangju Design Biennale 2011.

Ai, who is known for his outspoken criticism of China’s ruling Communist Party, was arrested at Beijing’s airport on Sunday morning as he prepared to board a flight abroad.

Since then, his wife and assistants have had no news about the whereabouts or situation of the 53-year-old artist, according to the Gwangju Biennale Foundation and foreign news wires.

His wife asked Chinese authorities about the reason for his detention but was given no answer, the foundation said.

“We regret that China has arrested the co-director of the international design exhibition Gwangju Design Biennale without clear reason,” the foundation said in a statement yesterday. “Beijing should make public Ai’s whereabouts and guarantee his safety.”

“One of Ai’s assistants called us,” said Hong Ji-young, public relations head at the foundation. “The assistant said 10 police officers searched Ai’s studio and residence in Beijing on the same day he was detained and most digital files and computers in the studio were seized.”

It is unclear whether Ai will attend an international academy about the Gwangju Design Biennale at T. Art Center in Beijing’s 798 Art Zone on Friday, which he is supposed to chair, the foundation said. But the academy will be held regardless of his attendance and the biannual exhibition will be also held in September as scheduled, it added.

“It is very regrettable and embarrassing to arrest the co-director of the international event in this way,” Hong said.

The Gwangju Biennale is Korea’s largest contemporary art show and one of the oldest and biggest regular art events in Asia.

中 예술가 아이웨이웨이 反정부 혐의로 연행

새 둥지 모양의 2008 베이징올림픽 경기장을 설계한 설치예술가 아이웨이웨이(艾未未·53)가 반정부 혐의를 받고 3일 경찰에 연행됐다.

월스트리트저널(WSJ)은 아이웨이웨이가 3일 오전 베이징에서 홍콩으로 떠나는 비행기를 타려다 공항에서 경찰들에게 붙잡혔다고 보도했다. 심문을 위한 일시적 연행인지, 반정부 혐의를 받고 구속된 것인지는 아직 확인되지 않았다.

경찰 당국은 베이징에 있는 스튜디오 작업실도 완전히 포위해 전기 공급을 차단하고 그 곳에 있던 직원 8명을 심문하기 위해 소환했다. 중국판 트위터인 웨이보(微博)에 올라온 아이웨이웨이 연행에 관한 글들은 모두 삭제되거나 접근이 차단됐다.

아이웨이웨이의 연행은 최근 중국 정부가 `재스민 혁명`을 지지했던 반체제 인사들을 체포하고 있는 시점에 이뤄졌다. 정부는 지난 2월 중순부터 인터넷을 통해 `재스민 혁명`을 지지하는 운동가들을 강력 제지하고 있는데 지금까지 십여명의 반체제 운동가와 변호사, 블로거들이 체포되거나 가택 연금됐다.

중국 정부는 일찌감치 아이웨이웨이의 반정부 활동을 예의주시하고 있었다. 아이웨이웨이가 정부 풍자 퍼포먼스를 계획하고, 반체제 인권운동가 지지 활동을 벌이며 정부와 마찰을 빚어왔기 때문이다. 정부는 지난해 11월 아이웨이웨이가 류샤오보의 노벨평화상 지지 운동을 벌였다는 이유로 해외 출국을 일시적으로 금지했으며 가택 연금 조치도 취했다.

아이웨이웨이는 지난 1일 독일 ARD 방송 TV 인터뷰에서 중국에서의 예술 활동이 정부의 감시·감독 때문에 어렵다며 정부를 비판하기도 했다. 그는 "나는 자유롭지 않다"며 "나의 집 앞에는 두 대의 감시 카메라가 있고, 전화는 도청되며 인터넷에 올리는 모든 글들은 정부의 검열을 거친다"고 폭로했다.
