No ordinary diploma for these female graduates

February is graduation season for most Korean students, including one 19-year-old woman, surnamed Lee. But this is hardly an ordinary diploma for this high school graduate.

Lee is one of the first two graduates of Holt Goun School, an alternative school for unmarried pregnant women, or single moms, based in Suwon, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Seoul, in Gyeonggi. The world “goun” means “pretty” in Korean, and the school, run by the adoption agency Holt Children’s Services, opened last fall.

Lee became pregnant last year during her senior year in high school and had to leave school in October, just months before graduation. Later that month, Lee enrolled at the alternative school, though she eventually had a stillbirth in November.

“I wanted to give it all up,” Lee said. “These were some very difficult times and I didn’t think I had any future. But teachers at Goun School reached out to me.”

Lee is now an intern at a local company. In her letter to her teachers at the graduation ceremony, Lee thanked them for “teaching me the importance of life and the value of trust and consideration for others in relationships.”

The Holt school is open to school-aged girls who can’t attend regular schools because of their pregnancy. Korean schools often expel pregnant students, with some social stigma attached to unwed mothers-to-be.

Students at Holt may return to their original schools after giving birth or choose to stay put to finish their education there.

The Holt school was founded after the National Human Rights Commission said last year that young female students shouldn’t have their right to education violated because they get pregnant. The alternative school is supported by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.

Myung Eun-joo, principal of the alternative school, said Holt isn’t a full-fledged academic institution by itself, but rather a place that offers classes for students in need.

“Once you leave school, it’s harder than you’d think to go back,” she said. “That’s why it’s important to ensure single mothers receive their education.”

Holt has five full-time teachers, whose lectures mostly entail round-table discussions with students. An 18-year-old named Jang, who enrolled in February, is one of three current students.

“This year is my third year in high school and since I’ve got only one year left, I wanted to keep studying,” said Jang, who is due in July. “I feel I can do anything if I earn my high school diploma. I want to raise the baby and study here.”

Holt Goun School does not accept every single mom or mom-to-be. While its operator, Holt Goun Ddeul (Graceful Garden), admitted 144 women last year, only four were able to enroll at the alternative school, as nearly half of them hadn’t finished their secondary education.

Most of the girls had already dropped out or had been expelled from their previous schools, making them ineligible to study at the alternative school.

Myung, the principal, said conservative schools often expel pregnant students or recommend they drop out, rather than advising them to take a different route.

“Our teenagers are quite open to sexual relationships but [adults] put the blame solely on the children and offer little help,” she said. “From now on, we have to teach them the meaning of life and how they can survive in this world.”

졸업생 첫 배출 ‘미혼모 대안학교’

"여러 번 포기하려 했습니다. 이것도 저것도 정말 다 포기해버리려고요. 너무 힘든 시간이었고 한 치 앞도 보이지 않았습니다. 그런 제게 손을 내밀어 준 건 고운뜰 선생님이었습니다."

지난달 고등학교 졸업장을 손에 쥐고 사회에 나와 기업 인턴사원으로 일하게 된 이모(19)양은 학교를 졸업하는 소회가 남달랐다.

이양은 고3이던 지난해 남자친구를 사귀다 임신했고 졸업을 코앞에 둔 지난해 10월 학교를 떠나야 했다. 출산을 한달 앞두고 `홀트고운학교`에 등록해 11월 아기를 낳았지만 사산했고 지난 2월 어렵사리 졸업했다.

이양은 졸업하면서 교사들에게 보낸 편지에서 "엄마의 마음을 모르던 제게 생명의 소중함을 알게 해 주었고 철없는 제게 사람 간의 신뢰와 배려가 어떤 건지 알아가게 해 주셨다"며 고마움을 전했다.

학교 관계자는 "처음에는 졸업식까지 생각 못 하고 있었는데 각 학교에서 아이들 졸업장을 보내오니 마음이 짠했다"며 "공부하다가 애 낳고, 애 낳은 상태에서 몸 부어서 누워 있다가 다시 공부하고 그렇게 고생해서 받은 졸업장"이라고 전했다.

이양이 졸업한 홀트고운학교는 홀트아동복지회가 경기도교육청의 지원을 받아 운영하는 `미혼모 대안학교`다. 국가인권위원회가 `단지 임신했다는 이유만으로 학습권을 침해당해서는 안 된다`는 권고를 내놓은 뒤 설립됐다.

미혼모 모자시설인 `홀트 고운뜰`에서 운영하고 있으며 개교 5개월 만인 지난 2월 첫 졸업생 2명을 배출했다.

이곳은 일반 학교를 다닐 수 없는 학생들이 잠시 머물며 공부하다가 출산 이후 다시 학교에 돌아갈 수 있도록 돕는다. 정교사 자격증이 있는 교사 5명이 수업하는데 주로 학생들과 둘러앉아 대화하는 방식이다.

오는 7월이 출산 예정일인 장모(18)양도 지난 2월말 홀트고운학교에 입학해 동료 2명과 함께 수업하고 있다.

장양은 "고3이니까 1년밖에 안 남아서 공부하고 싶어서 들어왔다"며 "고등학교 졸업장이 있으면 무슨 일이라도 할 수 있을 것 같았다"고 말했다.

이따금 원래 학교에 돌아가고 싶다는 생각이 든다는 그는 "졸업할 때까지 여기서 수업 받으면서 아기를 낳고 직접 키우려 한다"며 "더 많은 친구들이 혼자 힘들어하지 말고 이곳을 찾았으면 한다"고 말했다.

하지만 장양처럼 미혼모 대안학교에서 공부하고 싶다고 해서 모두가 입학할 수 있는 건 아니다.

지난해 고운뜰에 입소한 144명 중 청소년은 38%나 됐고 그중 50%는 학업을 마치지 못한 상태였지만 개교 첫해 단 4명만이 대안학교에 등록했다.

임신부들은 출석 일수가 모자라거나 이미 학교에서 자퇴하고 퇴학당한 경우가 많은데 학적이 이미 정리돼서 대안학교에 들어올 수 없는 사례가 대부분이라는 게 학교 설명이다.

명은주(46.여) 교장은 5일 "대안학교는 그 자체로 하나의 학교라기보다 원래 학교가 위탁해서 수업만 해 주는 곳"이라며 "학교를 한번 떠나면 다시 학교에 가기가 생각보다 쉽지 않다. 그래서 미혼모의 학습권을 보장하는 게 중요하다"고 말했다.

그는 "일반 학교들은 아이의 인생보다 자신들 입장을 더 중요시한다. 대개 보수적이기 때문에 대안학교에 입소를 권하기보다 그냥 자퇴를 권고하거나 퇴학을 시킨다"고 지적했다.

그는 "우리나라는 10대들의 성문화가 개방적인 데 비해 구제해 주는 부분은 약하고 퇴학ㆍ휴학을 권하거나 아이들 책임만 묻는다"며 "앞으로는 아이들에게 삶의 의미와 어떻게 살아가야 할지도 함께 가르쳐 줘야 한다"고 강조했다.
